This game is by no means new. I played it about 2 years ago and was one of the leaders of one of the top 5 tribes in the world. I was also a top 50 player. I owned over 150 villages. Once you get deep into the game you absolutely HAVE to pay, but its not expensive. If you have two many villages and you don't pay the extra money for premium its near impossible to keep track of your stuff. That said, the game blows Ikariam out of the water. Bugs are pretty much non-existant. The game is VERY addicting and very time consuming.
I'm debating whether or not I actually want to play again. This game is like crack.... .bad bad crack....
It's also cheaper than Ikariam Plus. That costs about $3.25/month for the Plus thing, assuming you don't piss away any of it on the increased resource production (which is another matter entirely). Tribalwars premium costs less than $2/month, and it's a finished product, not the half-broken, half-finished product that Ikariam is.
Gameforge's tactic with Ikariam:
1) Introduce corruption, which drains away resources.
2) Sell Ambrosia, which boosts resource production.
Like an arms dealer selling to both sides of the same war.
