Long, long time ago, I am thinking 2004 - 2008, we had a "Rally"-TeAm, the Team AnandTech Sentinels (TAS), which went into action if an other team threatend to pass us in an DC-project. Thus TAS was a team within the TeAm.
TAS the concentrated all the resourses on that project to prevent us to be passed.
I was a proud member of TAS, and there were quite a few others: RudyToody, GLeeM, biodoc, FullMetalChocobo, BlackMountainCow, amdxborg among others ...
Here is - I think the first thread from 2004

During one of the races we had I was awarded the TAS Champion Belt

I would like to pass on that champion belt to the next champion.
To find out that champion, I propose that we have 7 races, each of them 2 weeks long, in 7 different project. The projects should be chosen by the need of the TeAm to better it's standing, for example in the 2015 Formula Boinc.

The member, who contributes most to the result of the team will be awarded the belt and may keep it for a year. Then there will be a new race.
The belt was designed by RudyToody and engraved by a friend of his. Some other members have had it, e.g. Caferace.
The belt buckle is a part from a CPU-cooler - probably for an AMD-processor.

What do you think of the idea?

March 16, 2015:
the race has started. The starting stats are posted.

Here are the proposed dates for the championship:

project #1: March 16 - March 29: EDGES@Home (more info further down in post dated 03-09-2015, 08:12 pm)
project #2: March 30 - April 12: MilkyWay@Home and - if you want - continue on EDGeS@home to keep our points.
project #3: April 13 - April 23: Leiden Classical and - if you want - continue on MilkyWay@Home to keep or increase the TeAm's points.
[PrimeGrid Challenge: April 23 - May 1]
[BOINC Pentathlon: May 5 - May 19]
project #4: May 19 - May 31: NFS and - if you want - continue on MilkyWay@Home to keep or increase the TeAm's points.
project #5: June 1 - June 12: Universe@Home and - if you want - continue on MilkyWay@Home to keep or increase the TeAm's points.
[PrimeGrid Challenge: June 12 - june 15]
project #6: June 15 - June 30. Leiden Classical.

Each race would start at 18:00 UTC and end at 18:00 UTC.
Thus the comps would have a 24 hours rest period for upgrades/updates, repaires, dust removal, etc.

  • The winner of each race would be the racer who has contributed most points to the TeAm.
  • The champion would be the racer who has the most wins, or if that is undecided, the racer who has contributed more points.
  • The projects would be both CPU and GPU-oriented.
  • The races are not limited to BOINC-projects. The project has to have teams, however.
  • This race is intended for individuals. Subteams make it difficult to award the belt, as it may not be cut into parts .
  • It is allowed for one individual to add his computers to an other, however, the donor of computer power will not be awarded anything. Borghing is allowed.

I may think of some more rules but the most important rules are those below:

  • Have fun crunching.
  • Don't pout, be cool, and cool the CPU/GPU even more.
  • Don't whistle with beer in your oral cavity. :whiste:
Please propose projects for the different races by posting below.

Current racers and their points:

I remember TAS fondly.

GPUGrid is my favorite project (Their server/website is down and no work )
Poem@home is a good one.

I'll let others suggest their favorite projects.

Me too. I always wanted to be the TAS cleanup crew, so projects didn't drop off immediately once they lost support. I didn't usually get around to it though.

I'll let people who pay attention to the Formula BOINC stuff suggest projects. Though I would suggest that at least the last two projects not involve GPUs - the weather will be getting hot by then.

I'd play, won't win but it would be a good way to boost some of the projects for points in the Formula Boinc Race.

Hi all crunchers in the TeAm,
It is time to start the race. Please register in this thread ...

The first race will be in EDGES@Home from March 16 to March 29, 2015.

We just lost a point, and we need approx 4000 points to get one point and 73000 points to get two points. There were (at least 10 minutes ago) sufficient WUs to gp around ....

Lets get going!

I'm in...for this round anyway. I was unaware of this project and I find it's aim interesting. So I'm happy to join it, and happy to help bludgeon some other unsuspecting team(s).

Any tips on which of the EDGeS@Home tasks award the most points?

.

I'm also in, it'll be nice to work on project that I haven't crunched in a long time (edges was in beta last time I crunched for it). I'll switch over as soon as I go through my caches. Thanks petrusbroder.

I've been around here a long time and I never noticed this project either! I'm in, outside of PrimeGrid race times.

I'll do any of the projects that are CPU based and that will play nice on my office machines (a few projects don't). My only GPU is a wimpy old Radeon HD 5670 so GPU projects aren't really an option for me. EDGeS@Home is on my "to do" list so I'll definitely join that one.

I'm having a lot of trouble getting EDGeS tasks this morning. If Rudy Toody was in this race, he'd already be leaving.

It was borked late yesterday but seems to be OK now.

<rant>
I don't do a lot of BOINC projects normally, have been more into them lately, but I am somewhat disappointed by the lack of maturity many of the projects have. Lots of down time seems to make for a lot of constant monitoring of machines to be sure they have a project that has work to do. I like to set'em and forget'em. It took forever to get some tasks for Gerasim@Home only to have it run out, climateprediction.net only has Linux and Mac work available, Collatz Conjecture goes down quit often and Constellation had a crash and I lost half my points. Thought things would be a bit more stable nowadays. Enough of my whining for now.

It's getting better, but I'm still getting lots of "Project has no jobs available".

I've cleared the decks so I can start building my new rig today. I will join in soon.

I thought you refused to run projects that didn't have enough work?

There is a trick I use to get work. After each request for WUs, I get up and walk around my chair twice in an anti-clockwise direction.

If you are out of work for an hour, there is no way to make up that hour, no matter what you do. My goal is to have 24/7 production for science.

The server status says there's plenty of WU's available, but I'm only getting a few more WU's then I have threads available, sometimes LESS. :/

For future races, I suggest any GPU races include the minority who use ATI/AMD cards...and make them quick, it's getting hot around here already!
