I'd like to do a GPU project before the weather gets too hot to support it. EDGES is a nice, low-heat project. What if we left it for awhile, e.g. to do Milkyway, and came back to it for a later race portion?

My only GPU (an old Radeon HD5670) can't run Milkyway so I'll skip out on the next phase and join up again for the next CPU project.

I think it would do us well to stay on the EDGeS-project to increase our lead. When we leave the project for an other CPU-project we will drop a bit and therefore staying around makes sense.
We could, however also start on something else ... Numberfields@Home, NFS@Home or - if there are enough WUs - universe@home test project ...
Inpu please ...

It would be nice to go for first place in Edges. Going from second to first place is a big 7 points. I think I'll keep at least some of my rigs on Edges.

Bummer. My GTX980 only does 72K ppd on Milkyway. I'll move my other GTX980 over to MW today so 140K ppd is max for me.

I believe the only reason we have points in Milkyway, and thus you are considering it, is because TennesseeTony was running it for a while. If he hadn't been there we would not be considering it. He said he was going to stop with summer coming.

The following goes for Edges, Milkyway and any other project we bump. We are still in the first quarter!
if we give a project a big bump, it will still need crunchers to keep it there

I've been having more trouble getting work lately. This time it looks like it's not just the odd way EdGES doles out WUs:
I see that it's been previously discussed, and I suppose it doesn't matter much now that we're about to switch from Edges, but I haven't been able to consistently get work from them. I run a lot of projects simultaneously, and just use the priority number assigned to each project to increase or decrease my focus on them. I increased Edges to my highest priority project, but this morning, looking through the logs, I see that most of the time, when I connect to Edges, I get no work available. Oddly, if I sit there and click update repeatedly, I will eventually max out my Edges queue. But if I don't do it, it only gets work sporadically, and just moves on to my other projects. I saw the discussion about JIT WUs and the linux script that was so generously provided, but alas, I am running Win7. Oh well, on to MW, I guess.

Thanks petrusbroder for setting this up and keeping score.

It seems to me that there is a more or less general agreement to run MilkyWay@Home as the next project. I also propose, for those who want, to continue EDGeS@Home, however, those points will not count towards the Belt.
Second post edited to reflect the second project.

We need to start recruiting if we want to actually WIN.
We need to start recruiting if we BELIEVE distributed computing makes a difference.
We need to START recruiting.

What do you think, we come up with a catchy title such as:
TeAm AnandTech needs YOU!
Then give a quick intro into wasted cpu cycles, curing cancer, finding new stars, mathmatics, etc etc. Then direct them to our forum, and spam all the other forums in anandtech until we get banned. :\

Remember this is primarily a team race, with a trophy, that happens to be semi-guided by our current, and very temporary, Formula Boinc standings.

Between races, and from the end of the last race:
...we should do what we did last year, which was everybody doing whatever they want up until around September, and then work together on projects that can get us some extra points [in the Formula Boinc race].

But GLeeM (hi Gary!!!! Hope you had a great vacation!!) has certainly made a number of good points regarding the strategies we should employ for the Formula Boinc, some of which require long term thinking and preparation (such as projects with limited WU's, especially one's we already have points in.)

If Universe test project gives out more WUs, we should get them. We are only 88,100 behind. There should not be much movement in this project.

A big part of choosing projects is if anyone had planned on moving it to 1M or 5M or a major Milestone. For instance, I had planned to move NFS to 5 or 10M this year. It is high paying.

Another thing to look for is if the project does not have many people crunching it. Like YAFU, not very popular, we already have points.

I recently noticed that FiND is high paying and so thought to run that to 1M or more if they continue to have WUs. But we are not that close to points so ...
Also it is a med/bio project, which should help, I believe. I don't know any more about it though.

We are not far from points in Citizen Science Grid and if they ever get SubSetSum going that might be an option.

Another thing to consider is if the project might close or only have a few WUs available. Like a few of the projects last year where we stole some points! Gerasim might be one of those this year? It is good paying, we have some points and are not that far behind more.

We have points in Leiden Classical and are very close to more. It is not very popular, maybe because it is low paying?

And finally: if we give a project a big bump, it will still need crunchers to keep it there

Maybe MW isn't the best choice in regards to the FB standings, as we will likely lose any points gained once summer arrives in force and GPU computing becomes infeasible, but it's great fun (for me) to see the other teams fall behind in the Formula (temporarily), and is a valid choice for a team race.

But it's not going to be much of a race for the rest of you if I toss in all I've got, so let's make a deal....I only win the Milkyway race if I can beat ALL (other) registered racers COMBINED!

Muwahahahahahaa! Bring it!

edit: (I've probably bitten off more than I can chew, but, hey, 2nd place ain't so bad...right?)

OK, lets see what this brings - but we should run MW anyhow to get some more points before the heat comes ...

And now lets look at the ...

Today the stats are not quite reliable - I've done the best I could find but we will see later.

Individual stats:

Our standing in the Formula-BOINC EDGeS:

And finally: our standing in the whole Formula-BOINC:

As I said earlier: I don't think we will jump to the first place during the race. OTOH: going from zero points to 18 points in just two weeks is not bad at all. And I do nit think that the lower teams will crunch as much as we didi - and we can always repeat this two-weeks effort.

thanks for the stats petrusbroder. One thing I was thinking about is that we can hold another race in the fall (sept-nov) in order to adjust our resources on where they are needed before the end of the year. Didn't include december because of the f@h race. By then it should start cooling off and more people will have their gpus available. I''l be leaving 7 cores on edges until the next cpu project since I have amd cards and it's not worth it to me to also do cpu milkyway.

Here are the final stats for EDGeS@Home.
First the individual numbers:

Then the Formula-BOINC-EDGeS-numbers:

Finally the total Formula-BOINC-numbers:

The winner of the first leg of the Belt-Trophy race is ...

The TeAm has gained 18 points in EDGeS during the race, and 1 point in an other project.
The total gain in Formula BOINC was 19 points, from #24 to #19.
A very credible performance.

I really like this idea. And then we may gain even more since we will have moved up in the ranks even more ...

And the next race is MilkyWay@Home. Starts tomorrow @ 18:00 UTC.
Please keep on crunching EDGeS@Home so we may gain the #1 spot - even if it is for a short time.

Thanks for all the work you do Pete! The TeAm really performed on this one, so close to 1 million pts and only a half day away from taking the #1 spot too! Good job, all!

As Tony said:

We are #1 - at least for now. From #11 to #1 in 14 days. That is an achievement - and has added 18 points to our scor - see post below!

Looks like we'll only be able to move up one spot this time, and overtake SETI.USA, at least temporarily. But I'm hoping that the TeAm surprises me with some serious output!

I dusted off my old and trusty HD4850 and got it running on linux (many hoops to jump through) and on MW@Home it matches the output of my GTX980! D:

I'm getting right about 2min per WU on all of mine (windows), how do they run on Linux? I get 80k-120k a day out of each one, not sure why so variable unless it's a lack of WU's.
