A new tenant complained to the old tenant who lives 1/4 mile away. I'm all pissy.

This manipulative fuck calls me under some stupid pretense and starts complaining about his apartment.

I used to live there just over a year ago and it was a decent bachelor pad while I was living there for 11 years. When I moved out the landlord put down new carpeting, kitchen flooring and new appliances and this 50 year old guy and his wife move in a few months later. Then my former neighbor said that they called the landlord within weeks of moving there with noise complaints.

Today the new tenant calls me to ask about some stuff I left in a garage, then non-sequiturs with ‘inquiries’ of fumes, odors and cat dander. He stated that the odor of cigarette smoke from his downstairs neighbor is unacceptable, yet him and his wife smoke. He then states that even thought they smoke, they always smoke outside and in the next sentence says , “We have the right to clean air.” I’m dumbfounded. I found dumb. Really. He further relates to me that the exhaust fumes from neighbors vehicles are noticeable in the apartment, too. This house was probably built in the 1800’s and has exposed Chestnut beams. It’s not exactly a tight build by today’s standards, but it’s certainly livable.

At some point, he explains that he’s on disability for a herniation in some vertebrae. Then gives me a fucking unsolicited history of his education and vocations (criminal justice and painter or some crap).

Many of us on ATOT have seen these apartment threads and the end result is usually, ‘Meh. Don’t live in apartments. Buy a house, etc…’ So’s I say to the guy, “Not to be a jerk – I’m just playing the devil’s advocate here, but why did you rent an apartment if you have these concerns?” His response was that when he and his wife initially rented the apartment, the windows were open. My wife reminded me that they moved in a few months after I left which would have made it December in Massachusetts.

I tried to be civil and pleasant just so I can get an item from the garage (not his garage, mind you) so that he wouldn’t take it. I’m supposed to meet him this weekend but I’m in the enviable position of not giving a fuck about this guy or even the item. Should I let loose and tell him that he’s a petty, manipulative fuck who needs to use his disability check to go to Arizona, or should I just secretly video the encounter and post it on ATOT?

Do both!

How did he get your number? That's pretty strange. I've never had any sort of contact with the next tenant of an apartment I previously rented.

Also, you rented the same place for 11 straight years? That has to be some kind of record.

I'm listed, he just needed my name.

As to your other statement. I have a good job with a 10-minute commute, numerous deployments with the Army as a Guardsman since 2001 and until last year I was single. I don't regret living there and rent was $525/month with a garage.

So, why do you care again?

Because I'm in an enviable position to not care about him or his wife. Thus I can tell this guy he's a petty, manipulative loon and not worry about it. The man is calling my home in a futile attempt to gather 'evidence'. I don't like him already.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it, most people just don't seem to be able to sit still that long when renting.

There is a bar that takes about 5 minutes to stumble from, too. There were plenty of times that I was wrong.

I was going to ask how he got your number, so how did he get your name? Secondly, why are you meeting this guy? Hell, why did you talk to him enough to get that much information from him? I can't tell who is more weird, you, or the other guy.

Why are you pissy? You put yourself in this stupid situation.

I think that the owner has completely stopped answering his calls because of his insipid/inane complaints.

So you do realize now that the dude's shifted from bitching about everything to the landlord . . . to you.

You may not care, but the fact that you'll have to put up with it (until you inevitably explode on him or block his calls . . . like his landlord) is an annoyance in itself.

By the by, what did you leave behind at the garage, if you don't mind me asking?

Step 1) Go over to their apartment.
Step 2) Powerbomb tenants onto a cactus.
Step 3) Drive home.

He is fishing for information for his planned lawsuit against the landlord.

Stay far away and do not return his phone calls.

You should be hearing from his attorney's PI in a few weeks. I would not talk to him.

No kidding.

Hmm. Strange situation, but I agree.. don't give him the time of day. He has no right to harass you.

I think I'll take MotionMan's advice and refuse to speak to him or keep it to an absolute minimum. I'll go over there and snag some of my stuff with a video cam on. If he's home and tries to interact with me, I'll see if there are any lulz for posting.
