It's wierd because normally if some guy was running around attacking people with a knife anyone trying to stop him would be applauded. I'm not sure why this situation is being treated differently.

Now it's possible that something happened before the film started but short of his wife being dragged from the truck I'm struggling to think of a situation where it would have been wise for him to leap out of his truck and attack people.

Well they did jump on his hood/bumper, I didn't notice any damage (doesn't mean there was none however) I'd be properly annoyed or even angry but not anywhere near enough to exit the car with a big-ass knife and start chasing people around, if he actually stabbed someone he could have been in deep doo-doo, on the other hand they were almost as bad by hurling lumber at him and hitting him with cheap shots when he was heading back to the truck..
