I just installed mandrake 10 last night and am basically new to linux in being a sys admin although I've been coding in the environment for a few years. I am have a few problems/ questions.

1. What is an LHA file? I'm guessing its a compressed file that you need to use an extractor on but I don't know how to extract it. If someone could give me a site with commands I would love to bookmark it and check them over later. Otherwise how to extract the files into a directory of the same name would be great as well.

2. I was trying to install a new program last night and I followed the readme instructions as far as building the files and installing the program, all the way to running the executable itself. The instructions said to type "3ddesk --acquire" and the response I get is "bash: 3ddesk: command not found" I've also tried changing shells to no avail. I've made sure I was in the correct directory and that the permissions were set correctly.
-rwxr-xr-x 1 user user 38345 May 8 03:06 3ddesk* The install file makes reference to /usr/bin/3ddesk/ does it matter if I have it in the /usr/bin/ directory to run the executable?

3. How concerned should I be about viruses and spyware on Linux? I know viruses aren't a huge issue, but are is there an anti-viral application that I should download? What about spyware? is linux susceptible to spyware?

4. How can I resize the screen in mandrake? I am using my laptop so I am not able to adjust the monitor to stretch things out. How can I change the resolution?

5. Ok last I would like to install my wireless NIC? my card is a Broadcom 54g maxPerformance 802.11g card that's what it says under XP anyway. Assuming I can find the linux drivers which it only seems they have drivers for older products, how would I go about installing them?

Ok I guess that's about it for right now, your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

if the file isn't in one of the directories in your path, you must supply the path to the file. If you are in the directory with the file you can just do ./3ddesk

Look in XF86 config.

You'll probably have to recompile the kernel to add support for your network card.

A very special Google

anyone have any opinions about number 3? btw thanks for the previous posts I've tackled everything except recompiling the kernel, I'm a little scared to do that, I'm gonna read up a little bit more before I jump into that one.

Linux isn't really susceptible to viruses (except for a couple) or spyware. With that said, you should use a firewall to limit hackers' access to your system; Mandrake makes it really easy: open the Mandrake control center, go to Security, click on Firewall, and uncheck the top box...that will close off pretty much everything (although no software firewall is by any means perfect and I recommend using both a hardware and software firewall).

Because it's not like those 'hardware' firewalls run any sort of software to do their firewalling...

For extra programs make sure you check PLF first. They might have what you need already packaged in a nice rpm format for Mandrake.
