A Puzzling Little Windows ME Problem

Thanks for taking a peek here. Windows is telling me I'm out of HD space (38 MB remaining). This is absolutely positively untrue. The drive Windows is warning me about is a small (3 GB) logical drive I set up to be used only for the OS. I have System Restore disabled and run a fixed swapfile of 500 MB on logical drive D. Everything has been fine for two years! Nothing of any consequence has been saved or installed to the C drive in this time. I clean up my internet trash regularly. I do the defrag thing frequently. Why all of a sudden does Windows think the drive is full? I'm really puzzled. Thanks!

If you have 256MB of memory, I'd say just upgrade to XP. Windows ME is the biggest ball of trash to ever be called Windows (that's not a very goot title, especially being compared to Windows 95).

have you run a virus scan or firewall on it? If you're on broadband it's possible that someone is usuing your system as a storage place for warez files, might wanna chack that.

Are you running Kazaa, is it sharing any files? Have you cleaned out all except the most recent System Restore Points? When was the last time you defragged? Have you run Disk Cleanup lately? Have you cleared out your Internet Cache? Why didn't you post this in Operating Systems Forum instead? When was the last time you cleaned out all the junk files on your hard drive? Have you uninstalled any unused programs? Are you on a network where people are using your computer for storage? Have you tried downsizing the swapfile size? Why dont you upgrade to Windows XP? Is your hard drive FAT or FAT32? Is the acutual size of the hard drive being reported incorrectly?

How much space do you allow for internet cache? Also how have u managed to run windows me for 2 years without it corrupting and falling over dead, and having to reinstall....

But MonkeyDrive, ME works the best for my beloved Combat Mission game! The XP/Nvidia combo causes that game problems. I have XP, but went back to ME for my beloved Combat Mission.

I'm on a 56k modem. It's a good one, and I can download over 5 KB per second. Could the bad guys still be doing what you suggest? I'm not online much, but I'm not very secure either. I didn't figure I needed to bother with AV and firewalls. Hehe....come to think of it, I haven't even checked Windows Update in over a year. I'm one big security leak if they can take advantage of a modem user who's only online 3 hours per week. Ya think they got me?

I'd run Windows Update pretty soon, and prepare to be amazed at the number of updates! You could always dual-boot ME and XP.
