A question about raid drivers

I want to reinstall Windows XP and I was wondering if you absolutely must install the raid drivers after pressing F6.

I will be using a Raptor 74gb for the operating system and a Seagate 500gb for the storage. Will anything happen if I don't install the drivers?

I have a Mitsumi 7-in-1 floppy drive, but I can't seem to get it to work. I've also tried two other drives, including a Sony, so I don't know why the drive icon doesn't appear under My Computer. I just wish they'd put the drivers on a cd instead of a floppy :|

Any help appreciated and sorry if this question has been asked before!

I don't know the specifics of your MB, and I know someone else will comment on whether XP will require the drivers to install. However, as far as RAID drivers go in general, you can easily slipstream them into your OS and create a custom CD, thus eliminating the need to provide a floppy. Nlite makes this extremely easy.

Use google and search your MB maker and see if they are needed. XP comes with a number of them that work.

As far as the floppy, it should be seen. Double check you cable connections. Also search Google and see if there is a specific way to install it.

You should be more worried about what won't happen if you don't install them. If you want to install Windows onto an array you absolutely need them, the same goes for if Windows doesn't support your storage controller with it's included drivers. If you don't care about using an array and Windows supports the controller on it's own then you don't need them.

Unless you are using good old fashioned IDE drivers, yes install the updated drivers. At this date even if XP has inbox drivers they'll be pushing 4 years old.

You only need to install the RAID drivers if you are planning to set up a RAID array. Given you are re-installing and your drives are of different sizes, I gather you are not using it now so you would not need to hit the F6 for the install. The NF4 SATA would simply act as if you were installing regular IDE drives and use the Microsoft IDE drivers.

I want to thank everyone for the advice. I must say I was surprised that no one said stuff like, "N00b! That's what the search is for!!" Everyone was very helpful and I appreciate that This forum helped me tremendously when I built my first pc and didn't know where to find the right resources.

I won't be having a RAID-0 configuration so I should be fine without the drivers then. I've tried making sure the floppy cable is connected properly, but it still doesn't work. No light appears or anything. It might very well be something to do with the cable that came with the DFI mobo so I will get a different cable and check again.

Thanks again for all the suggestions! Oh yeah, can someone tell me how to multi-quote so I don't make a bunch of stupid posts?

nothing to it. your just put beginning [ q ] and it will do the "quote" thing. at the end of the part you want quoted you do a [ / q ]. You can paste anything inbetween you want and you can nest them as well. When you hit the "quote" button in the forums all it's doing is throwing those Q tags in there for you.

note: my [ q ] 's above have intentional spaces just to make them display rather than function.

If you have to start nesting quotes a lot or breaking up quotes to put replies to individual components you might want to use the preview before replying. It's sometimes easy to get your begin and ends mismatched and get something [/quote]like this out of nowhere
