In the 1800's, if our President refused to end a war that cannot be won, then the citizens would overthrow him...literally.

Today, what kind of democracy are we if we can't overthrow ONE guy?

the kind of democracy where we respect our electoral institutions even if we don't like the people in them?

What if it gets to a point, like now, that voting isn't an option. What happens if it's gets down to a rebellion? We all know that no kingdom lasts forever, eventually the government in it's entirety has to be overthrown and started from scratch.

To think that this government will "do just fine" forever is moronic. History has shown us what will happen.

So do we have a French revolution where all of the ruling class in charge both Republican and Democrat get their head chopped?

So what you want is Anarchy?

That would be a good start.. Do you like watching them constantly lie to you everytime they open their mouths?

How about giving tax breaks to Exxon and Mobil

Uh, it's not about liking the people in them. It is whether or not those institutions are doing evil things. Why must one support evil at any time for any reason?

The stability of government, created in large part because of the vast bureaucratic institutions which have been formed since the 1800s, means that a rebellion is virtually impossible in modern America. You and I are simply too weak to bring down the government.

I think it is interesting that the founders seemed to have intended to give the citizens the power to overthrow government, when that is the very power that has prevented democracies in most developing nations from becoming successful. Perhaps they only intended that power to be used in only the most dire of circumstances, but even in a worst case scenario we are incapable of stopping the government unless those inside it joined along with us.

For there to be a revolution; the government has to do something to piss off the majority of Americans who never vote, and are ignorant of pretty much everything beyond their own little world. The British did it with their insane taxation. I think in general you find among average citizens, a general dislike for the direction of the country, but they are generally happy in their own lives right now.

For many of us, the revolution has already begun.

How about better government that looks out for the interests of the middle class instead of anarchy? Let's look at the performance of the U.S. government over the past couple decades:

National debt: Increasing.

Middle class jobs -- being sent to other countries or filled by foreigners on work visas (H-1B, L-1, etc.) or being taken by illegal aliens (ie, construction jobs) or being taken by a mass of legal immigrants. Many college-education-requiring knowledge-based jobs--the ones blue collar workers were supposed to train for--have been shipped overseas or filled by visa holders.

Population: Increasing at a third world rate of population growth. This strains the environment and raises the costs of real estate, making it more difficult for Americans to maintain a middle class lifestyle.

So, yeah, if I had to bet, I would bet that millions of Americans would love to throw all of the bums out and deport them to Mexico or lop their heads off. If you perceived that your country, formerly a middle class haven, was transforming into a third world country devoid of a healthy middle class, wouldn't you be pissed too?

There you go again. Trying to use common sense. Everyone knows common sense is not allowed anymore...

As for the debt, no big deal. We just keep on selling bonds to communist countries.
Like the man said, "I'm rich cuz I got another Mastercard approved".....

If we get into trouble, we just start selling off our infrastructure to foreign companies, you know, roads, water works, etc. Just the stuff that we have to have, and we already paid for. Let's pay for it again.....

Oh, and my new favorite saying, "There is a reason the labor market is called a market"

I'm curious as to how you came to this opinion regarding the 1800s? James Polk took on Great Britain and Mexico simultaneously during a single term and would easily have won a second term if not for ill health and his pledge not to run again in any case.

Lincoln didn't exactly have a good run of the Civil War until near the end when his commanders were changed and stopped engaging in battles whose tactics favoured the South.

Those tax breaks are just one of the many reasons for a nice "restart".

Obviously, telling or Senators and Congress members what needs to be done isn't working, they themselves are also to scared of the consequences.
