Work and Play... It more irritating when your friends/family know your good at what you do and in the big picture they all get computer stupid because they rely on you so much.

I just hate it when they volunteer me to other people without first letting me know. They always say "oh you're really smart with computers, it'll be so easy for you." Umm yeah sure of course. But do I want to help everyone especially people I don't know? Hell no!

I'd think that the secret for that would be to "volunteer" them for some free work in their profession in return. I'm sure that contractors, lawyers, doctors, and mechanics (etc) like doing freebies on the side just as much as we do.

what is this free time you speak of? I just work then go home and work more.

Sometimes I can feel the Blackberry taunting me behind my back.

Assuming I'm not on-call, I pimpslap it into the laptop bag as soon as my shift ends.

Laptop bag only comes out if I have to travel otherwise the blackberry goes on the counter with my keys and security badge as soon as I get home. Unfortunately with a small IT dept, there's really no time I'm not available.

What I hate is whenever anyone finds out what I do they expect me to fix all their ******, if you meet a doctor you dont ask him to give you a free check up.

uhh people I know would ask a doctor for advice when they meet him, heh..I make my sister give me free medical advice all the time =). Also asked other doctors that are family friends for advice..in return I'm happy to help her with computer problems

I love working with computers still (my own that is). Although I work as a software engineer now, I used to work in IT when I worked at college. This was especially bad as there are a lot of people close to you and then they find out that you're a Computer Science major and you work for the IT department. This is like a double entendre of uncool.

Then, you had to put up with the guys who thought they knew how to fix computers, but they actually made them worse. So you were the guy they went to last and had to undo all the mistakes the previous "IT gurus" made. That's the one thing I don't miss about college as I preferred to be left alone with my precious!

The only tech support I give to anyone else on my time is my mom and dad. I deal with them maybe 2 times a year and don't mind it. The friends I currently have I met at a former computer manufacture job so no tech support needed there. The rest of the family knows I don't like helping for free so they don't bother me that much, if at all.

I've only been in it for 7 years, but I'm not tired of them yet.

What I am tired of and already put a stop to was my in-laws calling me for help. I'm a network admin and not desktop support, I'd tell them, and I'd refuse to offer any advice on how they could add a new hard drive or get their Internet working because I didn't want any responsibility when one of them formatted thousands of digital photographs which one, of course, inevitably did.

I've been in IT in various capacities since 97 and I don't mind dealing with computers at home at all. I love working on the stuff. If I didn't I'd have a different job. Of course I don't like it if I have a hardware failure, but really it's not a big deal?it's more difficult to RMA something than it is to troubleshoot it.

A few of the people I work with are "burnt out", but I find these are the people that really don't like their job in the first place.

Working on systems other than my own, after work, is another issue entirely. Aside from immediate family, I won't do it.
