A question from a new user ME!

hello all
how u doing... before I ask my question I just wanna say how shocked :Q and stunned I am after i read about some of these computers that you guys own... I myself have a Celeron 500Mhz, 256 MB Ram and an Abit Motherboard 133 Mhz bus speed... I want to overclock it. and I am a novice in overclocking... I'd like to get some help in that area and where i can get some info on how to overclock and if it's a good idea to overclock a celeron... I could really use your advice ...thx

You probably won't get too much more out of that chip. You might get to the 600's. Need more info on motherboard though before I can give specific advice.

One good tip is to look at your system and see if you think it has enough air moving through it. And if your heatsink is adequate. Good cooling (heatsinks and case fans) is what keeps overclocked systems running stable. Give a little more info and maybe someone with your motherboard can give you specific advice on what settings to change.

If you are allready running the 133Mhz FSB, you'll need some damn good ram rated at about PC150/166 to overclock your clock locked Intel. If you only have PC133, you cant really overclock the FSB much because the RAM will be running over spec, which might not be a problem depending on the quality of the ram.

Come on people you should know a celeron uses 66mhz bus so that is 66*7.5, and yes Intel is locked but why not utilize the faster RAM? its what i do. increase the voltage as needed, but either set the jumper to FORCE the chip to use 100MHZ instead of 66, and that alone is 100*7.5....750...
i personally like AMD more but i own both and my 600 celeron is now at 900, scary but true, and i have a friend with a 533 running somehow at 999, he has the FSB to about 120, im not sure how he did it.

Geez! I cant beleive i didn't pick that one up Jscobie! Just boost up your Front Side Bus hurric, dont worry about the ram, if you have at least PC100 it should be fine.

But the problem is that you CAN'T just increase the FSB from 66 to 100 on a Celeron 500. The Celeron 500s are manufactured close to the top of the .25 micron process....the physical limits of these processors is somewhere between 550 and 600MHz.


An increase up to 563MHz (7.5 x 75) would be a very reasonable overclock and probably the best that you can really hope for without trying excessive voltage and exotic cooling. Even then, it is doubtful that you can really get much further.
