You are asking the wrong question. Correct question, why didn't the school administration listen to the black students and take their complaints seriously? Or doesn't that matter to you? Oh that's right, let's get out the crying towel for the poor little aggrieved white girl and let the black student population take their beatings. Let me put it this way, your wife may be legitimately a bitch but that does not give me the right to call her that in public.

Tired of that same old argument "why do you black people get to use the n-word and we don't"? The poor oppressed white man. Don't take it from me here's a funnier more intelligent retort...

This one tackles your question head on...

Tell you what, if it's that important to you we black people people will trade you white people the following (assuming you are)

You get the right to call us n****rs and we'll take the collective wealth of your race and call it a day.

I'll make it easier for you, how about starting with our lives being treated by the CJS as if they don't matter.

Context is a difficult subject to tackle for feeble minded individuals, I know.

Here is George Carlin to spoon feed it to you like the two year old imbecile that you are:

How dare you make calm and rational statements concerning the behavior of a child.

Tar and feather this man at once!

Why shouldn't black people be able to take ownership of the N word after centuries of oppression with that word being the most powerful linguistic method of that oppression? Words have power. Language has power, both to liberate and to oppress. Goddamn that black person for trying to take back some of that power! I know that pisses some people off.

Indeed, it is the context. What are you failing to grasp here with yet another one of your self owns? The whole issue was the context the word is being used in. It's not like someone rapping along to a song they like, it's using the N word in a derogatory manner.

Bad argument. The word should just die and not be the Property of anyone.

Sure, but that's ignoring the context of this countries history. MrSquished is right, also, it's one of the few ways black people have managed to take some power back in this country.

It's (the word) also largely culture. Whereas the example of CardiB Isa minority raised in the Bronx, grew up with the word used by other minorities in everyday language with other minorities. It's very rare for a white person, even raised in the inner city, to be using that word, because of the context of white people's history with that word.

It's not taking back Power though. Often the use of the Word is to use it the same way on the some of the same people that Racists would use the Word on. Not using the Word and letting it fall silent is Power and breaking with an unjust past.

Sure, but that's not how it's played out in the years following the multiple race based long term problems in our country.

What we want and what is aren't always the same, and I'm content to not say it, while hanging out with people who are allowed to. I spent 15 years in the inner city, and never found this problematic. I would say it was interesting when I was transplanted at 12 from a rural environment, where the word was used in a different context by white people.

I wouldn't mind at all if everyone stopped using it right now, wouldn't affect my day to day language at all. But it would still be part of our history, and culture contextual usage would a thing.

I mean, WRT OP, it should've been pretty obvious to the perp that what she was saying was not OK. But based on the news article, the culture of the school and whatever else her environment was made it seem like it was. I strongly doubt this is the only time, and the only context she said the word.

Saying this suburban white girl should be allowed to say it because a dominican raised in the bronx does is a pretty terrible argument.

Thinking that what a 15 year old says should be cause for Canceling is also a terrible argument.

While us adults can sit on the outside and cast judgements, the person who "canceled" her lived day to day in that school system subject to racism, according to the article, and is about the same age.

What I find funny about new catch terms like "canceling" is that it's literally what religious conservative culture has been doing for centuries, if not millennia. Same goes for other catch terms line "woke", it's just projection.

Maybe the nice young lady would like to issue a public apology and profess her deep regret for being so careless with her words.

And let's not forget, she learned it somewhere, so maybe those people will learn from it. But really, who am I kidding, this is america.

Define "Canceling"? She getting called out, made an example of?
Somewhere up in this thread it was suggested she had her life destroyed cause of one little mistake. Her life is hardly destroyed. Right? Its not like she was outed as a registered pedophile?
In essence this has nothing to do with the n word, it has to do with the complex nature of a concept going viral on modern social media, there is little to be done once a message has reached critical momentum. This is true for her and a shit ton of other people and different messages.
About the n word in it self, I dont understand why its hard to grasp, if you as a white person use the n word to try and fuck some ones day up... you might be that girl. Weigh your options according to that.

A 15 year old kid is more likely than not to do and say immensely stupid shit, and unless murder, should probably be given a pass on most of it.

Standards evolve. At one time it was allowed to objectify women at work. Funny story, I bought my mother a complete Looney Tunes DVD set for Christmas because she is a fan. Popped a disc in and this disclaimer came up noting people may be offended by the differing standards of the 40s and 50 compared to today.

Reminds me of a discussion I had with a friend not too long ago. We were discussing the movies that couldn't be made today, or would be so heavily edited, that the stories wouldn't make any sense.

A partial list consisted of:

Full Metal Jacket (use of the N and G words).

Apocalypse Now (see above)

Phantasm (use of the R word.)

Scarface (use of the W and N words)

The Godfather (use of the W (a different one) N, and G words)

Feel free to add to the list.

Blazing Saddles. I remember seeing it...probably in my early 20's (so, 10 years ago), and I was like "oh damn, you couldn't pull that off today"

You are too stupid to discern spitting in the wind. Carlin backs up my point. The "context" was the constant racial harassment of the black students and the administrators lack of action. That girl was the straw that broke the backs of the black students in that district and they took their own action.

I'll add more context, your constant excuse making for racism is the lantern hanging around your neck. I see you continue to wear it proudly.

BTW - I don't see anyone clamoring the cancel the legendary works of either Chris Rock or George Carlin both "comedians" who used the n-word liberally in their acts. Dave Chapelle uses it today without fear of cancellation Again, context is lost on you, genius.

Which scene?

You mean the one where they talked about there being a black Sheriff?

She didn't get to achieve her god given right to the absolute pinnacle of her white privilege. The message of the racist environment that was ignored by the school district got lost here.
That was the story line, that the community at large did nothing to curb outright racism, and swept the complaints under the rug just like they had for decades.
She got called out. Boo fucking hoo. She'll be fine.
I never had difficulty avoiding using that word, it was natural.
I call bullshit on the storyline that her parents ran a house that was free of that word, too. It sounds nice to say that she just dropped it out there because songs and shit, but the truth is, crap like this starts right at home.

- Word.
"She didn't get to achieve her god given right to the absolute pinnacle of her white privilege. The message of the racist environment that was ignored by the school district got lost here."
- So something was gonna give and it happened to be her. That is the odds you play.
And yea, the community, school, a total collapse of responsibility there. Sad.

Having a University first Accept you then Reject you is a pretty significant event. Your callous acceptance of this is not healthy.

That the university did not have the spine to listen to the whole story and stand by her, that is a completely different problem.

So she's 19 now, made the N-word video in 2016, as a stupid 15 year old, and has since expressed support for BLM, but her life is still being ruined by this? Not sure this is a shining achievement for civil rights.

They couldn’t get away with it then; that’s why Mel Brooks made the movie.
