I *highly* doubt he's doing it to get 12 cents back, but would rather know why this happened. What if it turns out that the waiter/waitress is doing this to everyone?

I doubt it. Well, unless the server is rounding off her tip in the same way the lazy customer is rounding off his total. I look at it like this. You have a blank under tip and a blank under total. Fill them both in next time instead of making the server do the math you obviously couldn't do without your calculator.

some lessons to learn here:
1. always tip in cash (pay in cc, tip in cash)
2. always state clearly what you are tipping and total amount (if paying by CC)

Next time just fill out the tip part instead of leaving it blank. Everyone has a cellphone with a calculator if you need it.

its 5 bucks...

negative. it is 12 cents. sometimes, I'd figure out the tips. most of the time, I wrote down the total and let them deduct the tip from there. not to mento the service was really slow....

That's your mistake. What makes you believe they can do the math??

"uhhhhh, uhhhhh, uhhhhhh, just make it 35.12, that way it's exactly 5 dollars for the tip and it only costs him 12 more cents. That'll be easier for everyone."

Perhaps a better way to have presented this thread is this:

"GRRRR, I rounded off my bill to $35.00 so I could more easily keep track of my exact balance in my checking account in my head. The restaurant rounded the tip off to $5, resulting in my debit card being charged $35.12. It's only 12 cents, but why'd they have to go and do something like that?"

Post your receipt.

It would be nice to see if the restaurant did actually screw it up or not.

Either case anyone who has a hissy fit for a one-time overcharge of $.12 on a $35 bill should probably have all credit cards revoked for life, simply for the sake of humanity.

5) Realize what a rude customer you were for leaving a tip of $4.88. Those waiters/waitresses must add up each tip to the penny on each day. Make their life (and your life) easier by just tipping in round dollar amounts. A tip of $4 or $5 would be so much kinder for them.

This was almost certainly a simple mistake. God knows I've done it before, I've just caught it before I've finished closing the check. Who knows how many times I've fvcked things up w/o catching it. Make life easy on you and your server and the restaurant and just drop it. The restaurant will thing that you are acting petty just to get free food, or that you are stupid for even caring, it might get the server in trouble. Wasted time.

Just go back to the establishment and tell the manager this tale, and that you want your 12 cents. But please have someone videotape it for us, so we can see the expession on his face. It will certainly be a good one.

I would just call the bank (or your CC company) and explain what happened, i'm sure they'll adjust it for you.

And who cares if it ONLY $0.12, it's the principle.

TWELEVE CENTS??

Most likely your server made an honest mistake and misread the slip when entering the amount into the machine. She probably thought you meant to leave a $5.00 tip. I doubt that she would have done it on purpose, as TWELEVE CENTS is not worth the possible hassle of losing a job for stealing TWELEVE CENTS in case someone decided they were actually gonna make a huge deal about TWELEVE CENTS.

It was probably just an error. I would be too embarrassed to call a credit card company for that amount. But if you decide to do that, please record it.
