A serious problem

Okay, I'm setting up an office network. It's a client-server model. There are five computers connected to the server. Previously, the computers all connected to a NetGear 10BASE-T hub. The hub has now been replaced by a gigabit switch (Dell, unmanaged). Before, each computer had an assigned IP address. With this switch, they're supposed to have them automatically assigned. For the two PCs running Win2k (and the server itself), this is not a problem. For the the three running Win 9x/ME, it is a problem. I'm thinking I need to upgrade these PCs to Win2k. Advice?

The switch is no differnet than the hub for ip addressing. They will not hand out IP.

Why did all the Win2k computers work without a set IP?

What did you change besides going from a hub to a switch?

I bet the Win2k machines are communicating via IP's from Microsoft's APIPA.

Funny but works, I guess.

If all these PC's stay in the office, non-laptops, then setup static IPs.

APIPA seems to be whats going on here.


you need a DHCP server somewehre on the network if you want the ips automatically assigned. DHCP can run on w2k.


or youc ant static assign
