i know this to be a silly question and as i was kinda unable to find any info on ocing a gpu

i decided to post this question

which yields a better result oc on core speed or memory speed

i KNOW iam a noob thats why iam posting if possible please send me a link on the theory of ocing

not how to oc
u know like some theory on the gpu itself like the one the cpu section has

Combination of core and memory is best but sometimes it depends on the GPU as well.

For your 8800gt you should overclock the memory as much as possible followed by core and shader.

ohh i have oced my gpu down to 1950 frm 1800 memory
and 620 from 600

i even want to know how better a 4850 would be then my 8800gt 4870 is little costly for me at this moment

and which would be better a 9800gtx or a 4850 but the 9800 is also kinda off my budget but still i wanna know

9800GTX or 4850 = whatever you can get cheaper.

However, it wont really be a noticeable upgrade from your 8800GT OC'd.

SO WHAT WOULD BE A QUICK FIX AND PROBABLE A CHEAP FIX TO MAKE MY PC A BIT POWERFUL ??
CAUSE IAM GETTING SOMETHING AROUND UNDER AND AROUND 40 FPS
IN MOST OF MY GAMES

What games?

What settings?

What size is your monitor/what is your resolution?

i play like assassins creed, gears of war and surprisingly age of empires and crisis and MY FAVORITE gta4 and sometimes sims2 !!
i never got a fps of above 40 for mostly at all settings

i just dont have the energy to type the settings and stuff iam just satisfied that it is under performing but what i can say is i have tried a wide range of settings ranging from 1280 x 1024 to 1680 x 1050 and from 0 anti aliasing to max anti aliasing. It almost performs same with some marginally increment

yeah but in not so graphically stressy zones i get occasionally above 50 but now it seems to be rare

and iam using a 22" viewsonic max at 1680

You really won't see a noticeable difference with a 4850. Sure you'll see a bit more on the framerate department but that doesn't mean it will actually matter in your gameplay. You said you have around 40 fps, nothing wrong with that really, at least according to my book.

Wait, so you never get over 40FPS at 1280x1024 with no AA in stuff like Assassin's Creed and Gears of War with an 8800GT and a 3.6GHz E8400?

i would guess that more of us here - although avid CPU O/C'ers [like me] don't really feel it is over all worth it to bother with the GPU till it is near EoL and you want those couple of more frames per second/

Pull a bigger OC on your core if possible. Most 8800GTs will hit over 650 on the core.

yeah i oced it i just figured that i was messing up the settings
now at no AA and no vertical sync at 1680 X 1050 iam getting some 32 ~ 45 fps is it a standard thing
and my card is running at some 87c ish temperatures for load and 65c for idle

my oc is like 625 / 1000

and in gears i don't exactly remember and i even lost the dvd
so right now i only have assassins, gta, age of empires and crysis

Use Rivatuner to turn up your fanspeed to cool that poor GPU off a bit. Based on your current temps it sounds like you probably have one of those first-generation cards with the fanspeed set too low.

Your memory at 2GHz is probably about as fast as it's likely to go without crapping on you.

Work on the core & shader speeds next. Core on most of these cards can hit 650 to even 700 as long as you have good cooling (both card and case, if it heats up too much you'll have problems). Keep an eye on the temps while upping the speeds and use furmark to test for stability.
