You are right. It is your life. But you are sharing that life with something that isn't you.
But do you even remember what it was like before you were addicted to nicotine?
I have never been addicted to anything, so I don't really know what it is like, to not be able to quit.
Is it painful?
I don't believe anyone wants to be addicted to it. But that's what keeps you going. Not you, but the addiction.
I'm not saying I am right and you are wrong with this. I've seen what it can do. It's sad.

"Another smoke huh?" or "Going out for your second lunch are ya?"

Based on this statement, his issue is not with your smoking but that you are taking multiple breaks to do so.

Thick skin isn't the issue, I just wanna tell him to F off!!! I mean it gets old after a while.

Laugh it off, because, who cares, right?

Otherwise, ask him why he's giving you a hard time. I bet at his age, he's got a story or two to tell about people he's known who've died from smoking related causes--maybe a good friend or two, close family members, maybe his wife. It's obvious he's coming from somewhere. Try humoring him and say "yeah, I know I've got to quit" as you walk by, because I doubt you'd be so bothered by his comments if you didn't feel some small pang of regret for allowing yourself to become enslaved by an unhealthy habit.

BTW, I'm dealing with a nicotine addiction of my own. Good luck to you, and wish me luck, too.

That's what it sounds like to me, too.

I should take up gum chewing, so every hour or so I can outside for 10 minutes and chew a peice of gum.

What would you recommend I do? And don't say to stop smokin cause this habit is something I've been dealing with for a long time now.

Jizz on him.
Holy sh1t!!! I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure you'd get fired for that!

No, I dont remember what life was like before being a smoker. I started early and have been smoking for 30 years. I am definately addicted, yes... but I also enjoy smoking. I like the taste, I like the smell, I like the feeling. To be honest, I KNOW I should quit. I would like to be able to quit... I am terrified by it though, for a few reasons. I am addicted and while trying to quit in the past, I have failed and it was physically and emotionaly painful. I would not know me as a non smoker. I am afraid of failing. I am afraid that the physical and emotional pain of my previous attempts will never go away. I would not know how to NOT be a smoker, it has been part of who I am for most of my life.

This might seem silly to a lot of people, hellfire, it seems silly when I read it... but I am being honest.

I think the post about him being upset about your breaks might be it ... I work with a guy who takes hourly 5-10 minute breaks. Consequently, I do that much more work than him, and answer questions on his behalf while he's outside smoking.

Could care less that he smokes, but hate that I have to cover for him. Boss is getting fed up too, so I expect changes soon.

buy a pack of chewing gum cigs. next time he makes a comment, tell him you don't smoke then take one out and chew it right in front of him before walking out to start your real smoke break.

Then the reason it pisses you off that people complain about it is because you feel they don't understand what it is like to try to quit?
You are you, and will be you when you quit. Except that you will have the knowledge I do not. What it's like to be a smoker and no longer be a smoker. You will always be able to say to yourself, "I was addicted, but I beat it. I beat that addiction."
But you have to quit for yourself. If you want to do something, and have support from friends and family, you can do anything.
You can quit. You deserve to quit. And if you really wanted to, nothing can stop you. Nothing.

i have to agree w/ "I think that I have a right to smoke, just as non-smokers have a right NOT to smoke" i dont smoke and never have, but that annoys me when people do that. remember when we were in nashville airport and all the smokers were squished in the sardine can/smokers room in a corner of the airport, and people were complaining b/c when the door was opened a tiny bit of smoke escaped?

also, i remember u trying to quit once, and i remember why it wasnt successful. the situation is different now. besides, u used to smoke much less before u met wally, so i think u can cut back, even if u cant quit outright.

edit: (u do have my full support when u decide to quit tho )

See thats the thing though. I basically work for myself. My co-workers and boss all work in the UK. And some days I'm too busy and won't go outside much, and other days it'll get really boring so I get on ATOT and take a few smoke breaks. What the hell would a security guard care if I take breaks or not.

Anyone in the IT industry knows that most of us actually do smoke. I don't know why that is, but it seems to be true.

Look at us... communicating thru ATOT!! hahaha!! how sad are we?
I remember when I tried to quit, twice... the first time was not so bad, and I went almost 8 weeks.. then I just started again. The second time... Good Lord!!! I was a mess... crying and in pain and freaking out... until Dave (my ex hubby to the rest of you)... finally threw a pack of cigs at me and told me to 'just fvcking smoke already'... hahaha!! That was a lot of years ago, and I fear that I am more addicated since then.

As far as your full support... you are thousands of miles away now... certainly too far away to sit on my lap to keep me from smoking like you did as a little girl.

Anyway, enough of hijacking this thread from the OP...

He needs to hand the secuirty guard a pr0n mag and tell him it is to give him something else to do instead of worrying when he takes a break.

You could take up alcohol and just go outside and crack open a beer a couple of times a day....

Smoked for 12 years, been smoke free for 7. I could care less if people take smoke breaks provided they work the rest of the time and they don't spend half the day outside.

Start blowing smoke his way.

Give him the finger as you walk by his desk, and then enjoy lighting up as much as you want.

i give my co-workers a hard time everytime the step out, partly because half of them smoke just so they have a "good" reason to take a break every hour.

Go smoke somewhere where the stale second hand smoke doesn't get pulled into the building where your security guard friend is forced to smell it because he is stuck behind a desk making half what you make at 3 times your age.

Actually, he doesn't smell a thing since we have to leave the premises to light up. Company policy at my site.
