So New Egg uses those annoying little inventory control labels on their OEM T-Breds (prolly all their OEM chips). After you peel it off carefully, you will probably have some nasty bits of label adhesive left behind. If you don't have Goof Off, I've found that WD-40 removes it really well. But DON'T just douse the core down with a spray directly from the can. Spray the tip of a Q-tip first and then use it to carefully swab around chip itself, taking care to avoid the core. I would not recommend getting any on the core itself as it is pretty viscous and will leave a residue. Use 97% or greater rubbing alcohol to clean up the WD residue. It may take a couple of rinses but you should be able to pretty much remove all traces of the label crap.
BTW, be real careful NOT to use nail polish remover. Although pure acetone is an excellent organic solvent, the remover they sell at stores tends to have glycerine, moisturizers, perfumes and all sorts of stuff that will leave a residue. If you aren't sure take the cap off the bottle and look around the rim of the plastic bottle. It will probably have dried residue from the spill over.
This worked so well that I will probably use WD-40 to clean the labels of my plastic ware, cups, etc. Anyone else feel free to add in their favorite solvent.
