I suggest picking up the Mike Myers A+ 2nd or 3rd edition Passport book. It's a cram style book that will help you study for the test. Also, I suggest actually buying the vouchers for the test and setting up a test date so that you actually have a set date and you won't keep putting it off, it helps. It helped me ten fold to get the test done.

I can honestly say that the A+ is not worthless and it lead me to get my job back in April of 05. Without it I would be doing grunt customer service work as opposed to being a PC Tech fixing computers for a living, something I enjoy doing and love. To the OP you're going to here this from many people who already hold great jobs and haven't experienced things from the bottom. A+ will get your foot into the door, it will get you that interview where you can shine. You will at least have one up on that other person who has slight experience but no certifications to back it up. Just do what you think is good for you, don't listen to the naysayers here. There will be many of them. I'm glad I didn't listen and went and took the test.

Btw, the test was reshaped over two or three years ago. I believe in 2003 they redid the test to make it up to date with today's standards.

I got my A+ cert a number of years ago. All I did was read about a 650 page book by Mike Meyers and then I went in and passed the test. I might have also used a CRAM booklet to review the day of the test, I'm not sure.

Oddly I almost failed the hardware (got like a 600 or something) but the software I passed with ease.

I also got CCNA, network+ certs that same week.

"naysayers"!

Wait a minute I have established my background and have experience looking for employment in IT from January '05 - May '05. In my area (midwest) there isn't a whole lot of opportunities in IT. All the jobs I saw during my search required 13+ years of experience there were no entry level A+ certified jobs.

So to suggest that A+ can get you a job is absurd. The internet bubble burst back in 2000-2001 so if you think IT is a good career field then good luck finding entry-level employment "to get your foot in the door".

I have seen testimony from several individuals suggesting that A+ does not help you get a job at all. I do not contest this statement, I was simply stating that I needed to attain it to keep my job within 12 months of getting hired.

I was simply responding to Nocturnal statements. I'm glad it worked for Nocturnal, however to say that it "will" get you an interview, it "will" make you look better, etc. just isn't the case.

Nocturnal makes it sound like A+ guarentees these benefits and the fact is that it "may" get you an interview it "may" make you look better, etc.

There are no guarentees in life except death & taxes .
