*INSERT PITCHERS NAME* gave up 5 runs in 3 innings. He is being sent to *INSERT BIG CITY* for an MRI on his *INSERT BODY PART*

Anyone else notice that it seems like whenever a "plus" pitcher has a bad outing - it is immediately the cause of an injury and in no way shape or form his fault for bad pitching.

just in the past week...

Billy Wagner said he has a strained left forearm and is scheduled for an MRI.
Wagner said he originally felt some soreness on Tuesday, and he blew the save Saturday against the Astros.

The Yankees said Joba Chamberlain left Monday's game with right shoulder stiffness. Chamberlain allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings before exiting the game against the Rangers.

Chamberlain, young and unproven... could go either way...

Billy Wags, aged and has a track record.... which can explain those bad outings

Billy Benitez has just killed the Mets in so many ways.

As for Joba, he'll be fine. Its not like he's got a ton of innings on his arm. Some rest and he'll be fine and I'm sure the Yanks are keeping track of his innings. More Rasner and Giese for you Yankee fans!

Giese hasn't been half bad. If we've had one thing going for us this year under Girardi, it's the bullpen.

Manny Parra might need a MRI on his face after that rumble with that lump, Fielder.

Based on the money invested in these guys, teams are going to be as cautious as possible with them.

and you know if they're being sent to birmingham to see dr. andrews then you'll see them in a year/year-and-a-half.

What? The Cubs have had only one pitcher this year have an MRI. We're only two years removed from when the Cubs had 15 different starting pitchers in one season, 7 of which had arm injuries during the season.

If you want to call something a trend - the trend is that salaries for starting pitchers have *exploded* over the past 5 years, and teams are far more cautious to protect their investments... except for the Brewers who seem intent on blowing out C.C. Sabathia's arm before he leaves on free agency...

As a Braves fan, I understand where you are coming from.

Hampton gets consecutive TJ surgeries.
Smoltz has shoulder surgery, prior TJ surgery.
Hudson to have TJ surgery.
Glavine probably needs TJ surgery.
A few other relievers have gone through TJ surgery recently.

Something is different about pitching in today's game. Either the great old pitchers used powerful pain reducers, the new pitchers are babies, baseballs have changed creating increased wear on pitcher's joints, or MLB needs to start injecting every pitcher with HGH constantly. What gives? Why all these Tommy John surgeries??

I wasn't aware that this was a new thing. Pitchers have been blowing out their arms for quite a while now.

I don't have enough experience to say whether it is or not...I can just look at posterity and wonder. All the greats...Ford, Gibson, Spahn, Ryan, Young, Paige, on and on....did any of those HOF'ers blow out their arms and take off entire seasons to rehabilitate?

And what about the hundred other pitchers at the time?

Look at the active wins leaders - Maddux, Glavine, Johnson, Mussina, Moyer, Rogers, Schilling, Pettitte, Martinez, Smoltz. They've all had relatively injury free careers. Yeah stuff comes up now & then, especially when they're 35 and older - some still pitching in their 40s! And they pitched through the heart of the steroids era when steroids undoubtedly aided hitters more than it did pitchers.
