My friend Nick hung himself just last fall. That idiot...

I went to Europe with him a year before that with another friend. That friend was best friends with Nick. The thing is, when Nick finally killed himself, my friend was least bit surprised. He told me Nick had it coming for quite sometime. He had extremely low self esteem and blamed everything on his height (He's about 5' 1"). There were previous attempts to kill himself and no matter what his friends tried to do, Nick would absolutely shut them out swearing that he would never speak to them again about his business. Friends didn't just know what to do. They had to back off in order to at least retain SOME distance with him...

One day he had his severely depressed moments again and did DUI and crashed into a neighbor's mailbox. In fear of going to jail and all the demons catching up to him, few days later he hung himself. So sad. He had loving family, friends and grandparents.... he was the only child at 27 yo. The parents are now without any kids...

Looking back, I don't think his height was the reason for his suicide. There are people who live with far worse conditions and still battle through - trying to get the best out of life. I think Nick just didn't have what it took to survive. Poor kid.

It really sucks to be born with any sort of mental illness... (depression) it drives you nuts, tortures you and you're miserable 24/7. I remember I used to be depressed as a teen. It's just miserable.... luckily, mine was the kind where you sort of shake it off as you got older.

From what you've said, and from what I know about mental disorder it was pretty unusual (but not unheard of) for him to commit suicide. Generally older or younger people get to that point not 30 yo parents. Suicide is usually a result of major depression which can happen at any time and be extremely difficult to deal with.

I do want you to know you're not at fault, and unless you were a constant companion in his life theres nothing you could have done. sounds like you were a good friend to him, and it's unfortunate he ended up on the path he did. Actions like suicide are the result of a delusional state, in that sense people of a stable mental disposition will never be able to understand them.

Suicide makes plenty of sense to me; life is stressful and crappy enough and it would be so much easier... still one can't go off doing something like that if you know what it will do to others around you. Sometimes you don't think anyone would care, though; that's the toughest time.

I buddy of mine hung himself in January. We used to go to Jet games all the time. We lost touch after a pretty heated argument. He had a drinking problem, and I tried to talk to him about it, but all I did was set him off. We lost touch after the fight.

We hadn't spoken for about 5 years, but because we knew some of the same people, I found out he had gotten 2 DUI's, lost his job, and spent 6 months in jail. His very hot wife, also had enough. She took their 2 kids, and moved to Florida.

I thought he had turned things around when I heard he was getting married again, and had become a plumber. Someone said I should call him, but I didn't. That weekend he killed himself. Apparently, he still was drinking, and his fiancee said she was leaving him.
