Well religion definitely gives more understanding to people about other people.
Sorry for the bump. I found this thread googling for Lawrence Krauss' "stars" quote. I read the whole thread and this caught my attention.
So religion gives more understanding to people about other people?
Okay.
Let's take Islamic beliefs for example. Are the people in Amazonian tribes, African tribes, South Pacific Island tribes, et cetera who live their whole lives naked (you've seen them in National Geographic and in documentaries), are these people immoral and disgusting? Don't you just wanna wrap them all in black cloth from head to toe?
They have been naked everyday and have been so for generations, comfortably communicating with one other without being scared of each others' body parts and can control their temptations.
What gives any person of Islamic faith the right to tell others they are wrong showing X amount of skin and what they should wear? (ex: Yousef al-Khattab telling England to "fix your women")
Is this understanding people? Or is this a misunderstanding of fear and not wanting to learn how the human brain works (biology/neuroscience/psychology/etc)?
Christianity and gays. Let's condemn them all homosexuals to hell... because a book from many many years ago says so! Great understanding!
Not gonna go into a rant on that, but you can see how far it has gone:
