Please...Im desperate!!

"Folks.....In Win 95, if you drag a second instance of an Outlook email message out into a folder , Win95 would allow you place BOTH files in the folder without giving the famous "Do you want to OVERWRITE the EXISTING FILE"....Instead it would automatically rename the file by adding 1 interger to the end of the file name , like a 1 or 2 or 3 at the end of the filename. This would allow you to keep dragging the same outlook message into 1 folder and have multiple copies of it with just a different interger at the end of the filename.

However in Win 2000, it always just prompts to replace the file.....Why does this happen??

Anyone have a legitimate reason why?

thanksssssss

I was expecting something a little more serious.

Why don't you just rename the damn file.

dimwit....thats not the answer.....thats a workaround. And that wasnt my question. My question asked, " Why is it happening...?"

I need this answer to provide a tech support reply to someone who wants to know why it's happening.

My GUESS is that it has something to do with the difference in file structures from FAT32 and NTFS but I'm not sure.

I think its more user friendly to ask whether you want to overwrite the existing one. I'm betting it was designed that way.

I'm sure Saltin, thought the same thing as me. I figured you had some sort of catastropic problem here but the way you titled your thread. I hardly consider this "A VERY SERIOUS QUESTION PLEASE for PROs ONLY". If you're going to use a title like that please make it a little more life threatning.....mkay???

I would think twice before I flamed him with the remarks you did, the man knows his way around a W2K/NT domain and you might want him to enlighten you with an answer regarding that one day. He simply wondered why renaming the file wasn't an option. I wonder that as well.

<< My GUESS is that it has something to do with the difference in file structures from FAT32 and NTFS but I'm not sure. >>

It has nothing to do with FAT/NTFS. They are file structures, what you describe would be a way the OS interprets a copying a file. Know the difference between a file system and an operating system. Who are you tech support for again???

As I mentioned before the way it handles a second instance of a file is what the operating system is designed to do. I can think of various reasons Microsoft may have changed this behavior. I also will be willing to bet there's a registry hack out there that will change this behavior.

Hey Psycho...If I knew the freakin answer....I wouldnt be ASKIN the question ....now would I , skipper?

So I am most likely wrong!......However, dont be so quick to discount the NTFS/FAT32 file system as the guilty culprit in this case.....It could have been done for security reasons as such which prevents duplicate copies of the same file within a folder.....it's just an educated guess.

Dont worry, this is what i told my caller anyways and she took it hook, line and sinker......and everyone's happy! If you feel you have a more professional answer, swing it this way and put your knowledge where your quick witted mouth is....please

I work as a tech support analyst for Anderson Consulting.....so what is that supposed to mean?......I treat all my callers with respect and resolve most of their problems. Where's your credentials?

..........At least I have a website with pictures of me in action!

DarkFudge: You might want to check your attitude, it might get you out of phone support one day.

Everyone who has replied to this thread has credentials above answering the phone. If you want civility when you ask a stupid question, you're going to have to pay for it.

You must have the wrong number. This is a Message Board, not a boat.

<< So I am most likely wrong!......However, dont be so quick to discount the NTFS/FAT32 file system as the guilty culprit in this case..... >>

Nope, but if you don't understand exactly what a file system's role is I don't have the desire to explain it to you.

<< It could have been done for security reasons as such which prevents duplicate copies of the same file within a folder.....it's just an educated guess. >>

So exactly what would that security risk be again. Sure there would be copies of the file but they would have different names. That's aside from the point it's not the file system.

<< Dont worry, this is what i told my caller anyways and she took it hook, line and sinker......and everyone's happy! >>

Oh boy, a tech support company that feeds it's customer's crap and hopes they believe that. That what the world needs. Insert rolleyes emoticon here.

<< If you feel you have a more professional answer, swing it this way and put your knowledge where your quick witted mouth is....please >>

I did. I told you it was not NTFS and it's a result of the way the OS handles duplicate files. I'll put my knowledge against yours anyday.

<< I treat all my callers with respect and resolve most of their problems. >>

Just like you reeled that lady in "Hook, line and sinker", right???

<< Where's your credentials? >>

Ooohh all the smoke, heat and flames in this thead!!

Time for some of us, ok, I really mean ME, to go home.

DarkFudge: I liked the link.

At least now I know why you've got such an attitude in the earlier posts...yet another reason why I don't work at the help-desk any more.

BTW, Psycholic and Pqee are right about the "why".

Im by no means an expert on this, but I felt like popping in. I hope thats ok Gilligan.

<< Oh boy, a tech support company that feeds it's customer's crap and hopes they believe that. That what the world needs. Insert rolleyes emoticon here. >>

Didnt you know? Thats what tech support is supposed to do. Atleast that is what we were told to do when I worked tech support. As long as the customer didnt cancel...

And I would be a happy customer right now. Id be laughing my ass off. File system problem? WTF?! HAHAHA. The answer given is even funnier than the question asked (and thats a tough thing to do)!

Anyhow, no flame thread in the OS forum is complete without me, so I figured I would stop by. Hi mom!

Interesting point of view......listen folks, I see nothing wrong with feeding the caller on the other end a line of digestable bull if it makes them feel comfortable and content and allows them to get back with their normal lives....as long as no one gets hurt. It's easier for me to feed them a quick BS answer rather than research the exact truth, try to interpret it myself, then have to re explain this technical answer to a mo mo that has no technical clue whatsoever and just responds to my book perfect answer with a flurry of more rediculous questions that seem to start with why, who, how....and ultimately welcome more work on my part to satisfy this dolt!

Am I wrong....or just extremely efficient?

It's the part about not wanting to "research the exact truth" yourself that makes me laugh.

Extremely efficient!?!? How is being too lazy to research a real answer efficient?

Did you ever think to tell the person that you were unsure of the answer?
Is being honest that hard?

Or, as in my case...I generally know more than the Tech, but I'm unfamiliar with the particular implementation, and I know that they can fix my problem, or more likely put me in touch with the person that can--that's their role, and they're not bad at it.

But, when they feed me a BS answer, I know it. My opinion of their knowledge/skills goes down, and whenever there's a management discussion about increasing their role or rights, I remember the "tech support" who BSed an answer to me, and it reflects on the rest of their organization. I try and minimize the rights and responsibilities given to that group.

Woodie...I understand your point

I am specifically reffering to users that dont have a clue whats going on but yet feel inclined to ask every question under the sun because their very genetic makeup demands knowing how everything in the world works

For those that are quite technical, I cater my answers to appease them as well with more research oriented and technically accurate answers

I find it hard to believe that you would feed a customer (paying customer) a line of crap just to appease them. If you worked for me, you would be fired on the spot.

I dont have a clue whats going on, yet because my genetic makeup demands knowing how everything in the world works, I have to ask, why would you need multiple copies of the same outlook message?

I dont know myself....and I dont ask these dolts either......quite frankly, I dont really care why they want to do that....if I ask, I may open a whole new can of conversation worms.

I'm simply just looking for the answer here......and I dont think one person actually knows it....thats pretty interesting, considering, you are all supposedly,.....the experts
