Check it out ATOTers! It's the video I was talking about in that last thread re: HD vs SD. Decided on HD in the end. Hopefully this is not considered spam, as I actually made this vid (shot and edited it).

It's for a technology company called Swype. Their thing is new software for typing on a touchscreen phone, basically just tracing through letters to make words... watch the vid you'll see.

Feel free to ask questions, and comments/feedback is appreciated.

edit: Ahhhhh! Another video I did for the company got "leaked". It's a side by side comparison of Omnia II typing (Swype) vs iPhone. It's actually about a minute long, don't know why it's 26 minutes long with 25 minutes of black

I was on the iPhone in this one. I'm not an iPhone user actually, and I've since gotten better and know I could go much faster than I did there. Though regardless of this you have to consider that it's not a fair comparison. If Swype were on the iPhone with the iPhone's awesome screen, it would be ZOMG fast.

How many "big deal" responses did you get, versus how many "Ohh, neat!"

And I'm calling shens on the old guy thinking it was neat. He doesn't text.

from a feedback standpoint, the sound was pretty bad on the video. Too much wind interference (could be solved by adding an external mic) and the dialogue is dwarfed by the background music track. I also think that if the point is to highlight the technology, you probably should have put more shots of her actually typing the words and then cut to the people's reactions, if only to mix it up a little.

That and removing the old farts from the video, they don't text.

Most everyone who took the time to see it at least thought it was cool. Though some people definitely had the "stop bothering me" thing going on even though they allowed us to approach them.

I definitely agree. I used the camera's onboard mic and the wind interference definitely picked up. I tried my best to edit it all out but some parts were directly over the speech.

You really think the dialogue is dwarfed? I had had it a good deal louder but actually turned it down... you may be right though it seems like most people are understanding what was said.

Re: shots of actually typing the words, yep I thought of this but the main focus for me was the people's reactions. To intercut with her typing the words would take away less from seeing their full reaction... at least this is what I thought. I could see it both ways though.

Criticisms: good resolution without "HD"... but it is stopping and buffering more on my machine, which is on a FIOS connection that I'm the only one using. That's not good. What res was it? I thought YT auto-detects HD... here it isn't marking it as such.

As for the content, I was hoping to see the typing once again, perhaps slowed down somewhere in the video down the line. I felt the need to go back to the very start because of this, which would mean I would have to wait out 4 mins or stop it before it's over (which I'm sure you wouldn't want). Too long a wait.

BTW, I'm wondering what if you have to type qwerty out? Do you just stop at each letter for a second? Is it that sensitive? I'd also like to see the letters as I type them. Would suck to get a long word wrong somewhere near the beginning. With all that said, I <3 physical keyboards more.

nicely done, but i think you should've thrown in a bit more of her swpying than 100% people's reactions

It was shot in 720p 1280x720 and rendered to that res in .mp4 form.

Now that I think of it, one more intercut of the actual swyping being done would've been good. Somewhere in with the other slow motion parts would've been nice I bet. I could easily see myself doing the same thing as you, going to back to the front and being like WTF youtube.

What do you mean by having to type qwerty out? If the word was all in a row on the same line you mean? As far as qwerty, I'm not sure it's in the word database but it's very easy to add words in. Just tap them out and hit the space bar, and they're automatically in the database so you can swype them.

You pretty much never have to stop at the letter. It's a super smart system, created by the inventor of T9 actually, and it somehow figures things out for itself. If the word is all on the same row, well it can get confused sometimes then. There are tricks to get around this, like the words pit and put, to differentiate between them you can do a hop from p->u->t by tracing arcs above the keyboard instead of just straight across.

It might be nice to see the letters as you're going but honestly once you've used it for a while it's not hard to get to the right letter without actually seeing it under your finger. For smaller phones I've seen this be a problem, but not on this one.

edit: Oh yeah and for long words, it gets really accurate then. Even if you do mess up it can figure it out... I've accidently put a wrong letter in the middle of a long word and it still got the word right.

Neat idea but I can text faster with two fingers and with iPhone's excellent auto correcting system than I can tracing with one finger.
