I know this is stupid, probably unhealthy but I did it!

I spent a week without eating anything, only drinking a lot of water.

Although I don't believe this is a good diet, I lost 10 pounds, I am 180 lbs now!

I feel proud of myself, I feel like I have a better chance to survive if there is some sort of natural catastrophe or tragedy.

holy sh!t man...you know if you just go back to eating like you did before you will just gain it back eventually. you threw your body into starvation mode...it's not going to want to burn anything now..or at least for a while. (that means it's going to hang on to every single calorie and gram of fat you take in for a while)

and btw, I think a human can go up to 3 weeks without food...just no more than a few days without water.

You just lost a lot of MUSCLE. Diets such as that burn off muscle as well as fat. That is what you want to avoid. You'll gain all your weight back shortly, but it will be more fat this time. :Q

Actually, your metabolism is at a snail's pace now, so you'll most likely gain more weight back.

I will try to eat less food; otherwise all this effort would be worthless!

I am definitly going to avoid candies; I used to eat a pound of M&M's almost every day

I didn't use to eat a hot dog, I used to eat 5-7 hot dogs in a row!

duckers, nothing personal but you are very stupid. you're screwing yourself over...if you want to lose weight, just eat reguarly but cut out the fatty foods - add lots of veggies and fruits into your diet instead.

I hope you'll choose a better diet next time and good luck on it.

if you continue, you'll die and your body will rot away to just bones. Nice and easy diet.

besides, fasts are not designed to lose weight, they were originally for spiritual reasons I believe.

Nero, sadly, I have never lost 10 pounds in a week before. I know I will DEFINITELY start eating less food now; so I doubt that I will eventually 'gain more weight'. Other diets haven't helped me before. Although I will gain weight if I keep eating as before; I know I won't do it because this is not the kind of effort you make when you are not really decided to achieve something.

First of all, you should have asked your doctor's or nutritonist's advice. I don't blame you when you roll your eyes and sneer - asking them would seem like going too far...but if you're serious, turn to a diet specialist and ask for advice. Also, you've posted 1000+ threads...get off your ass and go outside and do something...anything! And I should too...

duckers, trust me, if you eat even less than you were before, you are going to gain the weight you lost, and more. You may be 200lbs now, because your body was burning lean muscle instead of fat. lean muscle burn calories, fat sits there and collects more fat.

if you really want to lose wait and tone up (keyword), get Bill Philips "Body for Life" book. Hey, I was 240lbs and now I lost 40lbs, and I stopped the program for 2 weeks. I now am constantly losing weight, even though I am eating the fast food and the candy! Funny because if I even looked at a piece of cake, I'll gain 20lbs immediately!!!

Now I plan to go back to my eating plan (not diet) Monday, and get down to a nice 180 (mostly lean muscle not fat)!

Last week, I wanted to try something similar, only what I did was eat 2 times a day. I ate salads, fruit and juice. I didnt eat a lot, I exercised each day for like half an hour (stationary bike, some weight training, etc)...

At the end of the week I lost 9.5 pounds. And the good thing is, I believe I was actually living healthy for the first time in my life It wasnt even that bad because I actually didnt feel hungry. I would take my time eating, and would not feel hungry at all after only eating like half the food I used to eat before.

I dropped from 222.5 to 213 in the one week. I doubt in week 2 I will lose as much weight, but I certainly feel a lot better about myself.

I feel that I must go beyond what EmperorNero first said when he said "you're screwing yourself over" - its too late; you've already done it. One week without calories does such a number on your metabolic needs you would not even want to know how severe. If your body required 3000 calories to maintain weight before it may be easily under 2000 now. See my point? Whereas before you could cut down on calories to 2000 and lose two pounds of fat a week (a pound of fat has 3500 calories), now you need to drop to 1000.

Course, thats best case scenario; really your body is holding onto fat now. It doesn't need muscle - especially if you are not doing weigh bearing excercise - muscle will go first, fat last.

Starvation diets are very in appropriate to lose bodyfat. If you want to lose it you have to do one or all of the following four things:
1) increase calorie output (ie, excercise)
2) speed metabolism (excercise does this, especially weight training - muscle really burns calories)
3) decrease calorie intake intelligently
4) Change calorie composition

I know that right now you've lost 10 pounds and you think thats great. I don't want to rain on the parade too much but when people say you're going to regain this weight they are right - if you don't its only because of a constant battle and war not to. If you want to lose weight do it the hardway: This means longterm changing of eating habits and excercise habits. I've been through this myself, and I've watched a friend damn near fast off 60 pounds of fat; the muscle he lost was insane. He is now back up to his original weight, less healthy than before.

For the record you didn't lose 10 pounds of fat. 10 pounds of fat is 35000 calories - even if your body required as much as 4500 calories a day (7 days or so) at the start, after even 24 hours it would have decreased it's needs. I weigh about 185 pounds. If I stopped consuming any calories right now I guarantee that in 2 days I'd weight 4-5 pounds less. Its water and other non-fat substances for the most part. Sure there is some fat, there is also muscle.

No big deal. A week without food won't kill anyone or cause any permanent harm. It's a fast.

However, it is not a good idea as a way to regularly lose weight. It puts the body into 'starvation mode'. From now on, if you are serious about keeping your weight down, exercise regularly, cut out empty calories (all refined sugar, especially sodas, fried foods), eat lots of fruit and vegetables and drink LOTS of water.

The Hacker's Diet looks like it would be pretty cool. You pretty much weigh yourself every morning and keep track of the weight in an Excel spreadsheet. I've been meaning to try it. Only problem is I spend all my money on computer parts and don't have $50 laying around to spend on a scale ;(

I lost 10lbs in a week too once, for unknown reasons... just started dropping to 180 like you I swore my scale had broke or something... but used my dumbells to see if its relatively correct and was (me+weight - me = weight = check )

But to slowly reduce further, i've basically cut out all obvious sugars -- soda, syrup, etc, but have stuck to limited carbs (bread on a sammich) and "healthier" proteins -- eggs mainly, many whites with a little yolk (just color really). Even with the splurge of a hot dog covered in lard or an oreo binge, I've basically been maintaining weight and reducing if I don't oreo binge (unnecessary carb)... yielding 2 less pounds per week (second week now) with some exercise (not excessive, just parking in the back of the parking lots etc).

Maybe you should try the SUBWAY diet (vegetable subs or something similiar)like the dude from the commercial did.
Just kidding, you should go to a doctor and consult him first as some of the people already told you.

You've done yourself no benefit. The point is to lose fat, not weight. Go see a nutritionist or a doctor. You need the advice.

What's the problem with eating well-balanced meals with everything in moderation and getting plenty of exercise. This is the ONLY healthy method of losing weight, but everyone seems to ignore it in favour of other weird and not-so-wonderful diets.

Modern culture is certainly bizarro in many respects.

I am 5'7" and weigh 160lbs. I am what appears chubby, but its just a layer over some serious muscle. Its the way I'm built.

When I was in peak shape (before my car wreck, which laid me up and I got out of shape and am having a heck of a time getting back into it.) i would eat 5-8 THOUSAND calories every day. At one point during the middle of race season (ski racing) I was eating close to 10,000 calories every day and still loosing weight. It was all about the amount of work my body was doing. And at that point with a good healthy diet, my urine was clear (hydrated fully) and I only had to deficate every 4-6 days. Yeah I was going that long, but that is good, because it meant my body was using a very large portion of what I was eating.

As it is now, without regular exercise, I am in the 3-5 thousand calorie a day range and my wiegh is not changing at all.
