On my Gigabyte b550 gaming x v2 mobo i recently upgrading my ram and after turning xmp on the pc would reboot multiple times and after it finally posted the ram wouldnt be running at the xmp speed . I got it to work one time right after a bios update but cant again . swapped channels to a2 b2 and it works fine and apparently this is normal for amd mobos?? is this true or could it be a faulty mobo , ram or even cpu? And if this is true why is it like this and does it mean it wouldnt work if i had all dimm slots full?

What brand and speed is the DDR4?

Are you trying to use just two or all four slots?

Also to get advice that this is probably normal and not a faulty hardware issue

Can you post a link to the exact kit of ram you bought? I've never heard of Netac ram before and i've seen almost every brand.

For two sticks of identical DDR4 on a 4-DIMM AM4 DDR4 mobo, generally you place the DIMMs into slots 2 and 4. (A2 B2?)

Yea it did fix my issues from before .

But is it normal for there to be issues if u place it in slot 1 and 3?

Yes, there can be issues, if you fill A1 and B1, rather than A2 and B2. It has to do with "ringing" and signal termination.

Ohhh thanks that makes more sense I probably don’t need to know all those technical things too advanced for me . But just for the future, would be any issues filling out all the slots because of this because I read in some places there may be . And if there are is there a workaround?

Thanks

This isn't just an AM4 quirk. Every platform I've used in the last decade (as far as I can be bothered to remember dimm layout) has been this way, even x99 with 8 slots/4 channels was the slot away from the CPU in each channel.

Going back at least to 1155, A2/B2 has been the norm. It seems...counter-intuiative...why wouldn't you the #1 slots for each? But that's the way every board I've built with for more than 10 years has been. (I don't remember how earlier boards were configured)
