Will an R9 280x bottleneck AMD"s A10 7850k? I hear conflicting reports of yes and no. Does it really matter when gaming at 1900×1080? I went with an amd setup thru Xidax and now I'm kinda pissed off because main gear has a Valentine's day say at $1.300 for an i5 rig with a gtx 970. Oh well, I guess I can't get lucky every time.

Just turn off the CPU Turbo and OC to 4GHz and you will be more than fine.

Strange choice of an APU with a fairly strong discrete card
I too am curious about the choice of the A10-7850k for use with a discrete gpu.

Does it really matter when gaming at 1920×1080?

You should be fine. It MIGHT be a bottleneck in SC2/Skyrim, but my guess is that you'll be fine.

Simply put games are designed for the console with a certain frame rate in mind, sometimes 60 but mostly 30 FPS. Running the same game on a PC at 120 FPS or 4 times the console framerate requires a CPU that is 4 times faster than the console cpu. If you crank up all visual quality options to max and lock your framerate to 60 with Vsync, there be little "bottlenecking", but if you want frame rates of 120 and higher, the CPU cannot be fast enough.

Xidax is giving me a free gpu overclocking on the 280x. I hope it's stable cause I hear amd cards have problems with heat and the 280x is supposedly already clocked up to start with.

Been using a 7850K and later a 860K for quite some time. Anything up to a 280X/GTX960 would not result in a major bottleneck as long as you ensure that the CPU runs at 4GHZ.

I really suggest setting it to 4 Ghz manually if you aren't a fan of going further...especially since you can usually put the voltage a LOT lower than what it uses on auto.
4 Ghz boost auto goes up to 1.4 - 1.4125 on some boards...while some people achieved 4 Ghz stable at as low as 1.2 V(and 1.1 for the 860K...that one generally reaches lower voltages, especially on NB).

Mine runs at a moderate 4.1 Ghz with a voltage of 1.325.
Auto boost it would go to 1.41 just for 4 Ghz. Doing it manually you will likely even drive the temps and power consumption DOWN...#justamdthings
And while you're at it you might as well just bump up the NB from 1.8 to 2.0(You might have to bump up the voltage for NB one single bit..but at least temp wise it would still be lower than auto mode because of that dreaded 1.4+++ Volts for the stupid auto boost).

If you're not going to use the iGPU you will have a lot of playroom even if you happen to be using the heatsink that came with the APU.

P.s. you're obviously going to have some performance problems with extremely CPU heavy games or games that don't multithread. But generally you would be fine for 90% of games imho.

Look at Dying Light. I wouldn't go near anything AMD CPU wise if you want high minimum's - games want singlethreaded grunt still and AMDs current CPUs just do not offer that. You will notice a difference vs Intel and games will dip and stutter more, especially heavy AAA titles.

My AMD was bottle necking me in Starcraft 2. Towards the end of the game it was close to unplayable.
