I have cheapo Apacer 3200DDR with Samsung TCC4 chips and it looks like these slightly slower than optimal timings don't effect scores by much at all based on the Tom's article so I won't be moving to faster ram.

*All test run on SOYO K8USA Dragon Ultra Black Label with AMD 8151/ALI M1563.***Shuttle AN50R used for testing 2.4ghz+ with latest tests in bold***

nice scores and good work for the testing done!

looks like your Barton @ 2.43 GHz sure it giving the A64 a run for its money in most benchmarks, hehe. of course, the UT demo score is nice to see as well (favoring the A64)

Nice work! Interesting to see that the UT2003 Demo benchies favor the A64 more strongly than the rest of the application benchies seem to. Do you have some new RAM on your agenda soon? Can't wait for Episode 2: The Clawhammer Strikes Back

While you are spending money, please do it right and get some PC3500 CAS2 (Hyperx comes to mind)

Is 2.3 the highest you were able to OC with the Soyo board?

Thanks for all the scores by the way

Good work mate. Interesting to see how with the higher latencies the score for the A64 is within the margin of err for some benchmarks even at a difference of 200Mhz (2.1-2.3Ghz).

However, your benchmark results for the Barton clearly show that upgrading at the moment if you have a highly overclockable T-Bred (like me) or Barton (like you) would be a waste of time and money. I'll be waiting a year or over until the process matures and some REALLY killer chips start to appear.

Also with my preference for gaming over anything else, upgrading the graphics card over my CPU will be more of a priority for quite a while to come.

Excellent benchmarks though!

Thanks guys Something to consider with these benchmarks is that some are vid card limited more so than CPU from the scores I've gotten, like 3Dmark '03 and AquaMark for instance. Also, some of the Benchmarks are more clockspeed, cache, and latency dependent, like SETIbench and POVRAY. The 1 good game test and CPU effecting test I ran were UT2k3 and 3Dmark '01 and they showed the best gains. Benchmarks like PCmark *and Sandra which I didn't waste any energy on* don't do the A64 CPU performance justice IMHO, but they do show how well the memory and HDD performance improved over my dual channel nF2 system, and the overall system performance is very noticable to me. Decompressing files on the HDD such as zip or self-extractors, and actually playing a game Like Halo@1024x768 with everything on high and specular on, immediately impressed me. Sometimes in big fights frame rates would get boderline with a little chop but wih this setup it's very smooth and more enjoyable game play.

As to the Soyo, it'll run this 3000+@2.3ghz with the divder for ram just fine, give it just 1mhz more and it's time to clear the CMOS. No AGP/PCI lock on this board from all indications. Also, at 2.3ghz I have to raise the HT voltgae from the default 1.2v to 1.4v, I need to look around to see if anyone has a clockgen or something for this board. I'm using the stock cooler so 2.3ghz is plenty till I get better cooling.

DAPUNISHER,

How do you like the Soyo K8USA? They look to be a tad expensive, but I am not to excited with the current Via or Nforce3 boards out....at least until the Nforce3 250 surfaces. I've been eyeballing getting a Athlon64 system, but only the lack of good motherboard choices are holding me back right now.

I'd keep waiting and see if the nF3 250 or a performance SiS 755 comes soon. THis thing is fast and stable up to 230fsb but it's no go after that which points to no AGP/PCI lock. Also, I've seen there was a problem with SATA raid not working *I haven't tried it* that SOYO just fixed so buying one of the boards on the shelf now might mean it'd have to be RMA'd just to get it working.

On the bright side, the HDD performance, and overall system speed is very fast. The black PCB looks good, the 9in1 card reader is very well designed and the cable easy to use, the S/PDIF module is another easily installed and well designed unit, and having the ability to use the IDE raid for extra HDD's is nice too. The fact that it's a true AMD chipset, rebadged or not, was another thing I like. The capacitors are too close to the socket for the CoolerMaster and stock cooler, but the Venus 12 was cake although the lever just barely cleared the caps to get in the fully locked position. I'm gonna keep it because it grows on me more everyday and the bios flash straightened out the quirks I was experiencing. HTH

Ofcourse you are going to keep it...I need you to do a review with 64bit shortly and we could have a very good comparison...Plus you are about the only one that has done most of the apps I have tested on this machine so I see some comparisons to mine....

i have a review waiting to be put on the board but I didn't know doing it in word and then saving it as a webpage was such a hassle...I may to link each of the picture or charts separately...

Will see I hope it will be out this evening....

Thanks for the feedback DAPUNISHER. I think I can hold out for a little while longer to see what the nforce3 250's can do. I also hear that Asus has a SIS 755 based board due out sometime soon not to mention the possible VIA "Pro" chipset that may or may not have a AGP/PCI lock due out sometime during the same timeframe. I'm hoping to do some good OC'ing. I have a Whitewater block just waiting to go to work. D-tek sez' that their Athlon64 tops should be ready any time now.....

wrong it would appear. The timings don't seem to have much of an impact on A64 so I'll be sticking with my good old reliable cheapo ram

Thanks for all the benchmarks. UT2003 looks real strong. And I appreciate your description of the feel of the A64 and its performance in Halo.
If you want more than 230 you could get a pci card that will keep your hdd at stock. Your nvidia card can probably handle being pushed a bit further out of spec.
I've read from users who have tested different ram that ras to cas is where the performance is and that it's quite significant. Tom may have been crippling the A64 in order to pimp for intel.
