Just put together a new system and i am getting idle temps around 56C on my FX-53... I am using a Swiftech 6400V heatsink with a 80mm vantec stealth at the moment. Is this a decent temp to be running idle without overclocking? If it is too high...better fan? did i apply my AS5 wrong?...anyone?

It should *not* run that hot when just idling. Is this after a cold boot?

I have a FX53, too. My BIOS reads about the same as yours after a cold boot, but if I restart my system the temperature reading drops by over 20 degrees celsius. I've hjad my mobo beep like crazy warning me the chip is too hot (ie, the mobo thinks it is running at over 75 deg C), but from what I've read the FX53 will automatically shut down if its built in thermal diode reads over 70 deg C.

As for getting an *accurate* read of what the temperature actually is, I really don't know what to tell you. I've read through various fora and haven't found a good answer other than a Mark I Finger or thermometer or other instrument placed on/near the heat sink or chip. Tomorrow I'm going to call AMD and Abit about the temps and see what I can find out.

What kind of case temps are you getting? One easy way to check if the hs is installed correctly is to touch it near the CPU (make sure not to touch the spinning fan, obviously). The base of the heatsink should be pretty warm if everything is installed correctly, if it's pretty cool to the touch that means that the CPU isn't making good contact with the heatsink. Considering that Athlon 64's come with heatspreaders, I doubt that the the problem would be a bad AS application. It might also be a problem with your motherboard, check to see if there are BIOS updates available.

The case temps are around mid 40s....the heatsink is definitely warm to the touch but not overwelmingly so but at least that is a good sign.

Rebooting or a cold start does not seem to make a big difference...both seem pretty high. The fact that it will automatically shut down is a nice thing, but are there any other side affects to running this hot? or is it ok to just live with it?
