A64 newcastle Asus SLI Delux Memory

This is a pretty stupid question, but I'm a little confused about the type of memory this mother board uses. I want to get DDR 500, but I've searched, and no where does it say that it supports that type of ram. Just says it takes DDR. I was hoping someone could help clarify the fastest type of ram for this mother board? Also, that dual channel stuff, about having the same size dimm in ajoining slots; that's also a little confusing. I'm getting an A64 3500+ newcastle. This will be my first time building my own computer from scratch. So I want to get all the facts before I get everything.

Was going to make a link to the memory list on new egg. But it appears that new egg is down. I'll edit, and include the link later. Wanted you guys to recommend a specific type of ram from whats offered on newegg. Because I'm going to get everything at once, and save money on shipping. (MB, VidCard, CPU, Ram, HDD)

Currently, ddr400 is the highest supported specification for the athlon 64. However, alot of ram can be run at much higher speeds than ddr400, and you must overclock your fsb to take obtain these higher speeds. Your motherboard will probably be able to hit ddr500 easily.

However, having your memory running at high speeds does not always lead to large performance gains, and it is usually fine to just leave it at ddr400. (Note that would can still overclock the cpu without changing the memory speed too much).

As for dual channel, on your motherboard, there are four slots that you can put ram in. Two of these slots make up one channel and two of them make up the other channel. If you have ram in both channels your system will have more bandwidth, but you have to have the same amount of ram in each channel.

If I were you, I would just get 2 512mb sticks of ddr400 corsair value ram. The small increase in performance that you would get from more expensive ram would not be worth the large increase in price.
Or you could get 2 512mb sticks of Corsair XMS 3200XL Pro if you want really high speed and don't care about the price...

Hey thanks a bunch loki! That was very helpful and informative. I just put my order in from new egg. Whats really cool about this mother board, is that later on down the road, I can stick 2 more chunks of 512 in the other 2 slots, and add another GF6800 GT for a pretty sweet performance upgrade.
