Well I just received an email from ASUS Tech saying that the Barton cpu is not within spec of the A7N8X.

Initial Query to ASUS:
Will the nforce2 board support the Barton CPU @ 400 mhz? I am seriously considering this mobo and would like this issue clarified. Will the
A7N8X support the Barton CPU?
Response:
Dear valued Customer,

Thanks for Contacting ASUSTeK. sorry, due to the spec, it can't.

Best Regards,
ASUS Customer Service Center Shanghai
Anyone have any thoughts?

if you're one of the lucky individuals who have gotten their a7n8x to run stable at 200FSB synchronized, then i dont see why it cant handle a barton at those same speeds.

Of course it won't support a square that has yet to be released. The 1st Bartons will be @ 166x2FSB and after 1 BIOS flash the MoBo's which can do 166FSB will support it along with it larger L2 cache. That loaded question to tech support is like asking them if the Company supports OCing and an unknown factor today IMO.

I recall reading sometime this summer when Nvidia released the Nforce2 that it would support 400 FSB. Most Nforce2 boards will run fine at 200 FSB providing you have decent ram. I have ran my A7N8X at 211FSB for days without a problem. Unfortunately my ram is not up to par at this speed and I had to settle for 204 FSB running in sync with ram. I can not make this board fail with any torture test.

Consequently if you have an unlocked processor and good ram Barton and 400 FSB should be a non issue (incidently my CPU is a Palomino 1900 unlocked)

RE:"I think you misunderstood my query - this was in regard to the fsb"

Maybe you should have asked about a 200 Mhz FSB. Not 400 Mhz and no mention of FSB.

Nforce2 already supports 400mhz DDR, but it may/may not support a 400mhz CPU bus. If he had asked if the A7N8X would support Barton @ 333mhz I'm sure the answer would have been yes. If you look at the jumpers on the board, it has the option for CPU bus speed of 333/266 (default) or 200.
