I am planning to purchase an IBM ATA100 hard drive. I have already one ATA66 driver and two CD-ROMs drives. I am thinking of how I could connect all these drives into my Asus A7V. The motherboard manual says that only ATA100 devices can be connected to ATA100 port. So, would it work if I connect my old ATA66 HD and one CD-ROM to primary IDE port and the other CD-ROM to the secondary IDE port and the new ATA100 HD to primary ATA100 port?

Thank you for your help!

There are 4 IDE ports on the A7V, two ATA100 and the other two ATA66. And yes, you can use ATA33/66 devices on the ATA100 ports. Because they're suppose to be backward compatible. Its recommended to have different standards on different ports. Like, give the hard drive a dedicated ATA100 port, because if there are slower device on the same port it will slow the faster one down. And give the ATA66 drive a dedicated one, because the CD-ROMs now are ATA33 and it'll most likely decrease the ATA66 drive's performance if one of the is on the same channel. I would configure it like this:

ATA100 primary: IBM
ATA100 secondary: nothing
ATA66 primary: ATA66 drive
ATA66 secondary: CD-ROMs

Also, I recommend the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45(ATA100) over the IBM 75GXP, it's faster than IBM.

I tried to put a 66 drive on the 100udma primary and the A7V could not read the drive; it did not show up at all. Is this a setup issue or is something wrong with my board? I have the correct (80 pin) cable and the drive is fine on the 66udma connector. I don't have a 100udma drive but I want to make sure the board is good before it is too late for an exchange or warranty repair.

Thanks!

As the manual stated, only ATA100 devices (drives) can be connected to ATA100 port on the motherboard. So to have your ATA66 drive working, unplug it from ATA100 port and connect it to either primary or secondary IDE port.

How do you know this? Have you benched both? What are your scores in Sandra? What is your access time? I believe it is 8.7ms for the DM+45 and 8.5ms for the 75GXP...

It is really a judgement call. They are both top of the line drives, or there would not even be a debate about which is better. I am pretty sure that any performance difference between the two will not be something that is noticeable to the user. I personally think that the IBM's are a better quality drive, but Maxtor's have been getting much better of late. I have not used the Maxtor, so I can't vouch for how good it is. For instance, the 8.7ms access time of the Maxtor vs. the 8.5ms access time of the IBM is something you would not notice. I do know everyone I have talked to that has the IBM is very pleased with it, and whether it matters or not, IBM has been making drives alot longer than Maxtor. There are two other things that have not been metioned here. First, the IBM uses platters made of glass, and it is the only manufacturer to do that in IDE drives, to my knowledge (most use aluminum). Also, I don't think anyone will argue that the IBM is much quieter than the Maxtor. I have two, and you can barely hear them at all.

Bottom Line: Both are good, do some research on them and do some searches through the forums and on the net. Then decide what one you want. It doesn't matter if everyone says one is better if you like the other one, it only matters what you think. After all, you are the one using it in your system, not everyone else. Good luck.

I had no problem reading my ATA66 drive with the ATA100 IDE ports. You have to use the ATA66 initially to get setup and load the SCSI drivers for the ATA100 port. Then the ATA100 works fine with ATA66 drives. At least it did with mine.

Dose this mean that I can connect more than 4 IDE devices into my motherboard, such as two HDs and two CD-ROMs to ordinary primary/secondary ports and two ATA100 HDs to primary/secondary ATA100 ports?

Thanks...

I have an Asus A7V rev1.02. I have an ATA66 Seagate drive and a Sony CDRX140E CDRW both hooked up to my ATA100 port.

I had no problems installing Windows ME from scratch, nor have I seen any other problems related to hooking up less than ATA100 devices to an ATA100 port.
