I have got an a7v now that is being RMA

The place where I got it from already told me I can pay the diffrence & get the kt7, but with the new info from toms on how to modify the a7v to bump up the voltage, & the fact that I just ordered a promice ultra66 controller (easily modified to fasttrack 66). This is giving me a little delema....

Any Sudgestions?

I had an A7V, never got it working correctly. Sold it, bought a KT7-Raid. Works like a charm. Get ABIT.

I have a kt7 just because of the softmenuIII. You might also consider the MSI K7T Pro2. It is going to have multiplier adjustments via bios. The K7t is supposed to be one of the better boards.

I don't have any experience with that speciffic Asus board, but the system I put together for friend with a KT7 was the easiest I have ever done. It's a great board.

I'd say Asus because I've used many Asus boards and never had troubles with them, and the few times I've had the distinct displeasure of working with ABit it usually resulted in dealing with their grossly incompetent tech support staff, if not a direct RMA (which by the way costs $25).

You've already had to RMA the Asus but at least they don't charge you because they fvcked up a motherboard, and their tech support staff is quite alot better than ABits.

ABit makes very nice boards if you can get them working right, if you are dealing with a store, and wouldn't have to deal with ABit directly you'd probably be fine with the KT7 (w/o RAID personally), but if you have to deal with ABit directly, it's not worth risking the nightmare.

Man, this has been beaten to death so many times. Your probably SOL with the Promise hack as that loophole has been closed. The new boards just won't do the Raid dance.

Well, I would say the KT7 too as that's what I've got (since Saturday). But I've had a load of problems with it:

1. Modem and soundcard clashing. Now fixed.
2. Mysteriously giving me double the devices on the ATA66 controller, so I have four CD Roms and two Zip drives. This causes Windoze (98SE) to reboot immediately :-(.
3. Slow startup for Windows - after the codepage stuff in DOS, it waits around for a while doing something (no idea what, exactly).
4. ACPI is a pain in the ass. I managed to get rid of it by installing Windoze with the "/p i" switch to the SETUP.EXE program on the CD. It means a little more work installing drivers but I'm on it at the moment, and it seems to be okay... touch wood...

I'm going to uninstall everything and start again, just to make sure that the current order that seems to work does in fact work. I'll let y'all know what happens.

My hardware:

Abit KT7-RAID
Tbird 800 @ 800 (no o/c, just yet)
128Mhz 133SDRAM
Creative GF2 GTS 32mb
Soundblaster Player 1024 (v. good)
USR 56K internal modem
2xIBM 75GXP hard drives
Zip drive
Floppy (surprisingly).
CDRW 4x4x32
CDRom 32x

If I were to choose again, I would probably go for the A7V (just to see if it's any better) or the MSI KT7 Pro and buy a Promise ATA100 to go with it.

Have fun
Tim
