It was no longer shiny but it was flat, and the Athlon and DFI AK76SN are now running for their third owner.

What is HAND LAPPING ???

Some form of SANDING ???

What materials are used ???

Lapping is a polishing operation where a workpiece is worked against a flat backing plate with an abrasive. In manufacturing, the process is usually automated, "hand lapping" is lapping by hand. For lapping soft materials such as copper and aluminum I use wet silicon carbide paper backed by a flat metal plate. #180 grit can be used for the first step, followed by #240, #400, and #600. I start with the coarsest grit using a linear motion until the entire surface of the workpiece is covered with a scratch pattern, then move to a finer grit. When moving to a finer grit I rotate the workpiece by 90 degrees and lap until the coarser scratch pattern is removed. At #600 grit I finish lapping with a "figure 8" motion. It is also a good idea to rinse between steps so that coarse grit does not get carried over.

After my A8N SLI Deluxe chipset fan started whining and slowing down, I called ASUS. I just received the newer version of the chipset fan from ASUS. It does indeed attach at an angle and runs at 5500RPM. Seems quiet. Although I had to remove my entire motherboard to install it, I am happy. This seems like the best solution (and its free!).

Please keep us updated at this therad on how the new fan works out for you down the road as it gets some wear and tear on it.

Is it SIGNIFICANTLY quieter than the original 8000RPM unit???

I just ordered my replacement fan today but I am still thinking of using the Zalman 47 passive heatsink instead of the Asus replacement fan.

Again, please keep us updated on your new fan.

Thanks,

Greg

I just replaced the old ASUS chipset fan with the new replacement one from ASUS. I called the number 510-739-3777 #3 for rma, 9-6PT. Took about 5 minutes to connect with the RMA lady. The serial number is on the top of the parallel port connector for the back, easily visible. SN 51ZGxxxxxx. I just told her that the fan was defective and she did not question it. I gave my address and I got the fan in a week. It took about 50 minutes to replace. I had to pull the board out of the case and remove it from the tray. I carefully snipped off the plastic push pin bottoms. The old fan came right off. I cleaned the chip with a drop of Goof-Off on a paper towel and then cleaned with 90% isopropal alcohol. The new fan is a little larger, somewhat lighter, and blessedly quiet! Peel off the thermal protection strip and mount with the fan wires CLOSE to the fan socket. Just push in the push pins into the mouting holes, the fan will be at a 45 degree angle. It will fit under any Video card as it is very thin. The fan's heatsink is noticeably cooler than the old one. The fan does make a noise but you have to stick your head next to it to even hear it.
I do overclock and so far the heatsink is cool to the touch. This looks like a real winner!

Is the REPLACEMENT fan really NOTICEABLY quieter than the original ???

How do we know that it won't burn out in a few months like the original ???

Fisher999 I am using XFX brand 6600GTs and yes my Zalaman is the tall HSF, but the center is the tallest and outside rows are stepped down.

I have a friend who mounted a zalman copper heatsink with a fan that rotates at 5.5k rpm and he says it's quieter then the other fans in his case now.

Thanks for answering my questions Rustler. I've taken a look at the XFX 6600's at NewEgg and they appear to be a bit shorter in length than some of the 6600's (like the Leadeks for example) so I'll keep them in mind.

I don't know much about XFX. Do they build a quality item and provide good driver, BIOS and customer support???

TIM = Thermal Insulating Material ???

Ceramique = ???

I know AS5 = Arctic Silver 5 so I'm not a total ditz !!!

Folks, do I have triple vision problems or did Nuro... just post the exact same post three times in a row, LMFAO.

What a way to get your post rating up. Keep going Nuro, you've got a long way to go, lol

ceramique is made by arctic silver, it is a different base (not silver) so it is not capacitive. i know on memory parts you should not use AS5, but i dont know about the chipset. and is it even necessary? is the TIM already on the new chipset fan good enough?

I would think it is good enough. I have been watching the posts at this thread and of the people that have received the replacement HSF from Asus I can't recall anyone mentioning using any extra thermal compound or anything else !!!! Of course some people may HAVE used some thermal compound in additon to the TIM pad.

I too am hoping that the replacement ASUS chipset fan stays quiet and does not break. It has been running now for 36 hours and the heatsink is definitely warm to the touch but not as hot as the old fan/heatsink. The fan is as quiet as all of the chipsets fans I have had before, like silent and unnoticeable. The only real concern will be to make sure that I clean the fan blades occasionally, but that is an issue with ALL fans.
I definitely needed to clean off the old thermal material as it look very uneven (as they all do when they are removed). I used the thermal material that came with the fan. I use Artic silver ceramique on my CPU's but I did not bother with the chipset. I do not know the thermal properties of the chipset but I am assuming that ASUS does. This material will be able to compensate better than a thin layer of paste for an uneven pressure on the chip (There are only two mounting posts holding the fan/heatsink in place after all).
As far as I am concerned, my problem with a bad and noisy fan is solved. It cost me one long distance telephone call and an hour of my time.

XFX are great cards, I am using the stock coolers and I just added HSFs to the memory on the card. I am using the 71.89 nividia drivers and the stock bios on the cards. I have heard that Leadteck RMA and tech support is iffy.

I prefer AS ceramique to AS5 it is easy to work with and since there is only a 1C diffrence in the temps. That is what I used when I put the Zalman on. Gaming my system temps are 36-38C, idle are 32-34 and I live in Arizona. Cpu idle is 36-37 gaming 44-47C.

Thanks for the info Rustler ! Coincidentally I'm browsing 6600GT prices right now. It's good to hear positive feedback on the XFX cards !

Just a quick question to confirm what I'm already pretty sure of, Asus sends only a new fan, not the heatsink, as well, correct? And it very easily replaces the one that comes with the board?

I may be buying this board myself and would much rather go this route instead of paying for the Zalman. As long as it's decently quiet.
