The fan and heatsink are a one piece, you can take them apart but for the most part they are together. you will recieve a new chipset heatsink-fan combo from asus if you call them.

Nope I used a small pair of dykes and clipped the push pins from the back, I have a new chipset fan but I am very happy with the performance of my Zalman passive HSF.

Rustler, thanks for all your helpful posts in this thread ! I've received my Asus A8N-SLI/Athlon64 3200+ "Venice" COMBO from Monarch and my RAM and videocard.

I purchased the Zalman NB47J and also called ASUS for their replacement HSF. The Asus HSF replacement hasn't yet arrived so I'm delaying my new system build to it arrives and till I decide whether I'm going to use the Zalman (and keep the Asus replacement fan as a back-up) or use the new ASUS replacement fan.

I would prefer to use the passive Zalman but some people are saying it's risky given the high heat produced by the nf4. Abit has just announded their new line of Nf4 boards using Silent OTES cooling. For more information click on this link and then clcik the Abit link which reads "Abit unleashes AN8 v2.0 Series". This opens up a new window that tells you all about their new THREE new nf4 boards including the info on the "heat pipe" passive NB technology called Silent OTES cooling. You can, of course, also click on the picture to get a larger view of the pasive heatsink and the TUBE running from the NB to the "collection" area at the back of the motherboard. Apparently from that point the CPU's fan is supposed to blow the "collected" heat out of the back of the case. To quote Abit

"...Silent OTES uses ABIT-designed heatpipe technology to transfer harmful heat away from the North Bridge to the Collection Module, where it's removed from the case by the CPUs fan. The result, a totally silent platform offering excellent cooling efficiency by utilizing existing hardware, ultimately providing enhanced performance, stability and a quieter experience for the end user...."

There is also a thread in this forum concerning the new Abit boards over here at AT.

Well, getting back to my question to you Rustler, have you been able to check the temps of your passive solution at idle and under load ???

Thanks for a respose !

Greg

Yes, I want to know.

What should I do to get rid of and replace my 9375rpm gattling gun?

Plain and simple, that's the way I want it right now.

Oh, and I have one ASUS N6600GT.

Should I call ASUS for an HSF? Even though I live in Sweden?

Anyway to get the new fan in Europe? All helpdesk stuff gets linked through to Taiwan where they just have useless untrained monkeys = no help at all. (from The Netherlands anyway)

Fisher999,

I had a Zalman CPU fan bracket and a 92mm fan blowing on the chipset I had it attached to the HD cage of my Lian Li pc 70, I have since put a 120mm blow hole in the side panel and added a 120mm fan blows fresh air right on the chipset area and into the video cards, I wasn't gettiong any insability I just wanted better air flow thru my case. Even before I added the 92mm fan and Zalman bracket I wasn't getting any instability with the passive HSF.

My temps now are CPU 38 *****System 35 they go up 4-5C when I am gaming.

Hi all,

Hoping you can help me out here guys. I have a Gigabyte X800 -XL PCI-E card fited with Silent Cooling meaning this beauty is cool, quiet, but has one large ass heatsink. I like the idea below of replacing the chipset with a 40mm papst fan, but would it work on my card do you think?

"Found a fan which works GREAT, and also even dug through the crates at home depot to find screws which would easily screw onto the existing heatsink through the new fan.
I hope this saves you guys a lot of time. Note however, the fan is a 4 pin fan........so if you want to plug it into the Northbridge fan slot you'll need a 4 pin to 3 pin connector. I just plugged it into a 4 prong.
This fan has an RPM of 4300, and is only 19 DBA! It's also made by a GREAT company, Papst. My northbridge temps idle at 32-34 C and it's completely quiet!
I bought the fan for about 16 bucks here:
(NOTE: Remove the current fan, it's simple and temps are lower without leaving it in there.)

http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/40mmpapst.html

If you want to purchase the same screws I used to mount it to the existing heatsink, here's all the info off the HomeDepot Screw Bag: "

Also, any ideas where I can get the below screws from in the UK???
#4 x 5/8" Metal Pan Head Phillips 13 Pcs 24791 ZINC/CINC

Cheers all

Sheefa

Does anyone know if it's possible to just unplug the chipset fan and still have a system that doesn't fry when playing games at a non-overclocked state? I'm definitely not going to overclock but will it work to unplug the fan?

Also, has anyone found out the maximum temp of the NB?

Wondering the same thing.

I would not suggest unplugging the stock heatsink chipset fan. The heatsink is really, really tiny. I replaced the hsf with a huge zalman heatsink and even that gets too hot to touch.

I called Asus at the USA number today, they are sending me out a new fan for the Nforce; said it should be here next week. I wonder if it's not the heatsink too-said I had to remove motherboard to install because of different pin placement.
Anyone else running the replacement? It's free.

I called last night cause my fan is basically toast. They told me...

Fan is different from the original one.
It needs to be mounted at a 45 Degree angle to fit the MB (so i assume it includes a heatsink).
Shipping USPS, so 1-2 weeks shipping time...

I wanted to use my pc in the mean time, so i removed the small fan out and put a bunch of WD-40 in it, worked at 8000rpm for a little while, but is slowly getting slower and slower, down to 6750rpm... i guess 8000rpms is too much even for WD-40.

I need to find some local store with a 40mm fan like the one sheefa metioned to use soon, not sure how much longer this fan is gonna hold :/

I tried to ask ASUS last night, the guy freaked out and said that i should not run the computer at all, and i told him i just want to know what temp i should watch out for... but he said he couldn't say or didn't know... :/

It seems my fan probably stopped working about 2 months ago, good thing I came upon this thread, or I would of never even checked! I have noticed myself getting a good amount of BSOD's in World of Warcraft, but no other problems. I am not sure if it is related or not. Going to call Asus now.

Quiet Cooling Solution for an A8N-SLI with an Arctic Cooling Silencer

I have an X800 XL with an ATI Silencer (oddly enough on an A8N-SLI - nForce 4 is a great chipset, what can i say?) and came up with the following solution based on similar fixes I saw on this site that combine the Zalman NB47J with the 40 mm Papst 412FM Quiet Computer Fan. Mounting the fan was a bit tricky as I bored and threaded holes for the screws in the heat sink base, however the result was excellent if a bit tight.

A caveat here is that if you have a mini-tower you'll need to support the top of the card with a little twine to keep it from sagging into the heat sink, no problem really but don't forget to do it or you risk damaging the Silencer's fan motor. The ATI Silencer makes a nice anchor point as well, you can just loop the twine around the Silencer's steel bracket and tie if off near the case power supply. Of course twine is not required if you have a horizontal case, gravity works fine here.

If you would like more cooling you can bore one or two 1/8" holes (the holes in the photo are larger) in the bottom of the silencer's scoop. I don't believe this is really necessary, though it didn't noticeably diminish the cooling power of the ATI Silencer.

Update - I am considering cropping a few millimeters off of the radiators in the row closest to the Silencer. This will eliminate the need for twine and should provide plenty of cooling.

BTW - I have one more of these assembled combos if anyone is interested.

i'm curious, does your chipsets get that hot that you need 7-8000 rpms? i haven't read through all the posts needless to say as i don't have the board.

it just seems like it must be the worst fan ever if you need that. my sli-dr spins at 2-3000 and my temps ar 40 idle and 45 load with 1.6v. i find that any more rpms don't do anything.

just wondering.

7-9k rpm is happening because Asus wanted a low profile fan that would not interfere with dual slot cards. If you take the fan apart there is almost no heat sink to speak of, it look s a lot more like an enclosure for a fan. Knowing this, the designers made the fan spin real fast, it even speeds up a bit as the system warms up.

I'm leaning towards the Zalman AJ something blue colour aluminum passive cooler to replace my A8N-SLI Deluxe chipset fan.

That, together with an intake fan, should take care of it.

The Zalman NB47J is a very easy replacement and worthy replacement as well. I've been running it for almost three months now without any problems.
