Sadly though, it's the same exact fan as the one on the mobo and will have the same issues after time.

After reading everything here I deciede to use the vantec iceberq gpu cooler. It took a little more triming on the mounts then I expected but the end result is great. I wish I had done it months ago. SInce I remember it being asked but not anserwed, yes the vantec comes with pins, I wish I hadnt destroyed one of the factory ones taking it out thought they are a touch nicer IMO. Hope this helps someone else and thanks to everyone for thier words before mine.

i solved my problem with a zalman fanmate 2...dropped the fan speed around 6100rpm and now..temperature are running around 50c flat out gaming...

I guess the bottom line..is how quite solution you want...

i use stock fan for amd...and Leadtek 6800gt...so i dropped the chipset fan speed as low as i couldn't hear it over the other fans...

So unless you have an absolute quite pc...then a simple heatsink...wouldn't make a big difference in my case...

It looks identical to the heatsink that comes with the Asus A7N8X series.

You are correct. You can get those separately. My local dealer has them listed on their web site. (not sure if they have them in stock tho) Perfect fit btw.

Aquila76, I hope that answers your question.

Just wondering can anyone confirm the space (in mm) available to fit a N/B heatsink if using a PCI-X Card with an AC N/V cooler.

I'm looking at a swiftech cooler cut down with a 10mm fan on it, just wondering if its viable, also anyone know if there are any fitting issues with the swiftech heatsink... any bits need trimming ?

Thanks

I have a 6800 ultra with a NV5 cooler, I'd say there is about 17mm of space. I could not fit the stock heatsink and papst 40X10mm fan. I ended up using the vantec iceberq cooler.

Is there any other fans except the papst that will fit with out any mod on the HeatSink? Because the only thing I've found is a sunon or an antec 40mm fan. And I was wondering if it would be quiter or it wouldn't change anything?

Hey guys, I wanted to let everyone know that I called that number for Asus Tech Support and told them I needed a new fan. They didn't even ask for a serial number, just a shipping address.

I did that last week, and yesterday I got a brand new A8N-SLI PREMIUM FAN. It looks like a much better fan than the old crappy one.

It is this one here.

Is the new fan as LOUD as the old one?

I got my replacement chipset fan from ASUS today it is the bigger version that I have seen on the Premium mobo, allthough I just put it away incase I have a RMA situation. I am using the Zalman passive HSF on mine.

I don't know if it's as loud as the old one because I got tired of Asus' 250DDR 1T issue and switched to DFI. I'm just going to install it on the Asus and eBay it.

Finaly my setup is complete and im pretty happy with the result.

2 Zalman VF700-cu on each 6800GT and the swiftech chipset heatsink + fan on the nf4.
The GPU 1 Zalman cooler had to be flip to let the swiftech fit. I made a custom side panel window on my Tsunami dream case so i can fit a 80mm fan in front of the nf4.

Idle temp

GPU 1 62
GPU 2 55
System 40

Work temp

GPU 1 71
GPU 2 62
System 44

For some reason the GPU 1 work at a much higher temp. I couldnt capture the nf4 temp by touching the heatsink i can tell it work pretty well and i think i could go without the fan.

Now one of the problem I got is the the top 6800GT bend a little and the heatsink at the back (dont know what its for) touch the swiftech fan. Anyone know of something i could use to keep it from bending like that?

Pic 001
Pic 002

Overall this setup is quiet but at that price I think going for water cooling is not a bad idea.

70$ CND for each VF700
70$ CND for the CPU Cooler
55$ CND for the Swiftech
10$ for the side panel
2x15$ for antec clear 80mm fans

I've got an Asus A8N SLI. I got fed up with the chipset fan so i replaced it with a Zalman passive northbridge heatsink (47mm i think, the blue one anyway). I then put an 80mm Akasa coloured fan into the side of the case(nearly above the chipset). I used Arctic silver 5 for thermal conductivity. It was easy enough to fit, the hardest bit was removing the push pins of the old hsf and aligning the new heatsink. According to Asus probe and MBM5, the mobo temp is now at 30C idle and 34C loaded. It was in the high 30's before. Hope this helps.

Sorry, but i can't be bothered to read 17 pages.

I called the Asus tech support line and all I had to say was "My chipset fan..." and the guy interrupted me and said "Oh you have the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe?" I replied "Yes" and he said they were "recalling" the original fans because they were defective. I asked if it was a genuine recall and he said no that it was just something they were told to be aware of. He forwarded me the e-mail that was sent to the CSRs... Here it is...

"There is a slight difference between the original chipset fan and new fan for the A8N SLI Dlx. Please see following attachment. Please make sure to notify customer of this if you will be sending them a replacement to avoid customer calling us about this simple issue.

Note that this is the improvised fan, that shouldn't be unstable like the original fan."

The e-mail included a pic of the old chipset fan and the new one. It looks like the new one attached at a 45 degree angle compared to the original. I will post the pic later tonight.

I asked if the new one was quieter and he replied, "Yes, very much so." I asked if I needed to RMA my board and he said "No, not unless your current board overheated due to the old chipset fan."

My replacement fan should be here next week.

EDIT: Pic of old/new fan.

Got mine today, sadly I had to remove the entire motherboard, but all in all, I'm much happier with it. Spins for me at an average of about 5500rpm and is MUCH quieter.

Actually Gigabyte is being inconsistent with their solution for cooling the chip on their nf4 boards. If you look at the photos for this Entry-leve GIGABYTE GA-K8NF-9 you will see they use an ACTIVE HSF. Then when you jump up to this GIGABYTE GA-K8N Ultra-9 you will note they use a PASSIVE heat sink for the nf4 chip. Then, confusing as it may be, when you look at the pictures for this lower priced SLI board GIGABYTE GA-K8NU-SLI you see they retain the PASSIVE heatsink but when you step up to this SLI board GIGABYTE GA-K8NXP-SLI they return to the SAME small cheap-looking ACTIVE HSF that they used on the entry level non-sli nf4 !!! GO FIGURE !!!!

You can probably replace the whole thing with one of Zalman's passive NB coolers and have a 120mm up front blowing over it. If it doesn't fit, you're only out $5.

I'm ordering THIS Zalman ZM-NB47J Aluminium NorthBridge Chipset Cooler to replace that chinsey little hsf that is on my Asus A8N-SLI mobo I just received from Monarch.

Close fit with a second video cards but the Zalman looks like it was made for this board.

Thanks Auxano, that's nice to know as I intend to use the Zalman NB-47 on my Asus A8N-SLI. Thanks for the tips !

Sorry I posted old material; I didn't notice the original date of the posting of this thread (way back in January) and didn't notice the thread is 18 pages long ( and counting ).

Thanks for ALL the possible solutions to the problem.

Fisher999 that Zalman is the best solution, I installed mine before I even booted my board for the first time and I called Asus and got a replacement chipest fan, in case I need to RMA my board, but it has been rock solid.

Rustler:

Thanks for your thoughts on the Zalman 47 PASSIVE heatsink. I'm going to order it from Newegg very soon.

My only concern is how it MAY interfere with some videocards.

I recently purchased a mid-range radeon x700 card (which I haven't used yet) but when the prices come down for the 6600gt's or the 6800's then I may buy one or two of them at that time or send the s700 back to the vendor and get ONE 6600GT now !!!

I notice your rig profile states you are using 2 6600 GTs. May I ask which SPECIFIC Brand and Model of 6600GT you are using ??? They don't give you any clearance problems with the Zalman 47 ??? You are using the blue Zalman with the tall fins right ???

Thanks,

Greg

The Zalman with augmented airflow is probably the best replacement scheme for the OEM fan. Just one thing bothers me about the Zalman heat sink: the blue anodized finish. I suppose the marketing people at Zalman figure that people will associate the color blue with "cool." Growing a porous oxide on an aluminum surface and dying it blue increases the cost, and slightly degrades the conductive heat transfer. Although an anodized finish can increase emissivity, radiation is not significant for a chipset heat sink. I just hope that the heatsink geometry was selected for heat transfer and not for looks. Some years ago I bought a Vantec copper hsf for an Athlon 1400. It had a pretty, bright-dipped finish, but wasn't flat. It took about a half hour to hand lap the base. It was no longer shiny but it was flat, and the Athlon and DFI AK76SN are now running for their third owner.
