I have searched up and down this forum for the answer to speedfan controlling the fan speed on the asus a8n sli deluxe. How'd you do it?

Thanks,

chipset fan dead after only 2 months for my A8N-E, called asus and they seem not surprised at all, they will send me a bigger fan and told me that I have to "rotate 45 degree to fit".

Definetely a design flaw, my northbridge was untouchably hot and either fan won't start or if it starts it runs crazy jumping from 1 sec at 700rpm to 8500 the next, and very noisy.

I just installed a Zalman NB47J on my A8N Deluxe the other day because my fan was dying on the stock one. It fit fine, you might have trouble if you have 2 video cards in it though. I only have 1 in mine right now, don't know if it would work with 2.

wurh wurh wurh, all i can hear is that lil fan on the chipset, its gotten progresively worse, hence looking for alternative,
ive got an ASUS A8N-E nforce4 board, i made attempt to contact ASUS but like other internatinals have been directed to taiwan
so to save my self an international phone call i am opting for the 40mm fan mod , looks rather less pain full.
just double checking that
- it fits on the stock heatsink
- inst overly noisey
- doesnt require removel of Motherboard
thanks

Morning all,

First post. Glad to be here.

Glad also to read about this subject: have just ordered one of these puppies:

http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=605042

to replace my v noisy northbridge on the A8N SLI deluxe.

However, I have not removed the stock fan yet. My MOBO is in a Thermaltake Tsunami case, which does not have a mobo tray, and I can't get to the back of the board by removing a panel. Is it possible to remove the northbridge fan from the front? I'm picturing using nail clippers or something on the plastic legs, then pushing the pins through from the front, and tilting the case so they roll to a place I can reach them. Would be grateful for all your comments on whether I'll be able to do this, and things to avoid.

And while I've got you: the Tsunami comes with fan holders for the 12cm fans at front and rear. These have unusual dimension screw holes in the rear of the case, which means that if I want to remove the holders and have the fans attached directly to the case, I'll need to drill new holes. Is it worth it, do you reckon, or are fanholders actually alright at vibration damping?

Cheers

Yes you can do it without taking the mobo out.

I took mine out and relized it too late.

Just get the plyers that can cut. Pull up on the "pins" that are holding the stock heat sync(under the stock fan) and cut it. small pieces of rubber should fall off from the other side. You should be able to get them once you put your tower back upright.

Then you can just pop the new fan in.

UPDATE!!!!
I had my replacement ASUS fan for about a month and bit and its still running fine. Great fan. Hope it doesnt fail on me aswell.

Did anyone have any problems with the stabilty of thier computer due to the heating up of the northbridge chip from a defective fan?

Also Asus wont send me a replacement fan for free, i gota pay for shipping which sucks balls
(or send in Motherboard wait 2-3 weeks)
Well done Asus Australia!

Also great place to put the northbridge, south of the boarder below the video card.wtf?

Makes Aftermaket cooling videocard and chipset a headache.

Oh and replacing the fan voids the warranty

they won't send you a replacement fan? Asus Australia must be smoking crack when they charged you shipping/handling. If I were you I'd yell at them and demand my money back.

My replacement fan was making very disturbing noises when I powered my computer on this morning. I left it running long enough to take a look at SpeedFan.

The replacement fan was spinning erratically between 1200 and 2300 RPM.

The sound it was making was awful. I turned the computer off and looked inside my case. Nothing was abnormal. I flipped the computer back on and the noise was gone.

/me worried.

I decided to bite the bullet and go for the expensive over the top solution because I don't want any more hassle and wasn't confident with a passive heatsink. So I got the Swiftech MCX159-CU Chipset Heatsink. It really is probably over kill but it's quiet and it looks like it will last. If I ever need to replace the fan again it should be easy to just take off the supplied fan and fit another. I wouldn't claim that fitting the whole thing in the first place was easy ... but I managed it and I'm no expert.

I have a quick question out there for anyone who has already replaced their A8N-SLI Dlx chipset fan with the Zalman NB47 passive heatsink. I have a new Zalman unwrapped and ready to be installed, but if you don't have a fan plugged into the 3-pin chipset fan connector the motherboard screams bloody murder. It says "CHIP fan failed .... this can be diabled in the BIOS" (something like that), but I don't see a place to disable it in the bios (just the CPU and chassis fans have those options).

Does a bios upgrade fix this, or am I going to have to press F1 for the rest of my natural born life?

!!!THE SOLUTION TO THE CHIPSET FAN NIGHTMARE!!!
(the perfect solution for me anyway... hope this helps someone)

My A8N-SLI mobo had the common problem of the chipset fan going out and it was replaced with Swiftech MCX159-CU Universal Chipset Cooler (which is an awesome chunk of copper,BTW). I was getting idle temps of 40-41C with the new chipset heatsink/fan. I wasn't to terribly impressed by those temps but I thought I was going to have to live with it. I decided to do some other things to reduce the overall temp of my system. Since my two 6600GT's are located right next to the chipset fan, I decided to look into cooling those video cards a bit.

My video cards were idling around 53C for one card (the card that the monitor is plugged into) and 43C for the other. They would reach temps of 80-90C under load. I even would see peeks of 104C at times. I did a little research and decided the best way to cool these card would be the ZALMAN VF700-CU. So I got two... one for each card. Since I installed these coolers I idle around 33-35C for both video cards and I haven't seen a temp above 50C even under load!

Here is the real kicker... now with the Zalman VGA coolers (that blow cooler air onto the Swiftech chipset cooler) my chipset idles around 33C and only goes up to about 37-38C max under load. One of the Zalman VGA cooler is only about 2mm away from my Swiftech MCX159-CU Chipset Cooler. They work together now. It seems they are like best friends. My Athlon 4800+ is running about 2C cooler as well. Couldn't possibly be happier with these VGA coolers and Swiftech MCX159-CU combo!!

Two months isn't that long. My original fan was still going after 10 months but I replaced it because it was getting progressively louder to the point where it was annoying to be sitting in the same room as the computer.

Update I just installed the XFX7800GT and the Zalman heat sink cleared the Video card with plenty of room. I think now I will get the other 7800GT to run SLI again.

is SLi really worth it? I have

case: Super lanboy:
Athlon 64 3200, 250western digital hd, 1g oz ram with heat syncs, 256ddr ATi All-in-wonder PCI-E. and offcourse the ****** Asus motherboard.

How would graphics compare you vs me?

My solution was to remove the existing fan cover and fan, and replace it with a 40mm fan, I had one with a 3 pin connector lying around which saved me money but if I hadn't then they are not exactly expensive.

To remove the existing fan:
  1. 1. Remove the 4 screws holding the fan cover in place, remove the fan cover.
    2. Remove the 3 screws holding the fan to the heatsink (You'll have to move the fins around to get access to all of them)
    3. Carefully remove the fan after unplugging it from the mobo.
    4. (Duh moment) Make sure you've accounted for 7 screws in total.

After removing the existing fan I discovered that I could simply place the new fan on top of the heatsink (You could change the heatsink if you wanted to but for most people the existing one will be fine).

To secure the new fan use self tapping screws just wider than the gaps in between the fins (about 1mm, I used 1.5mm screws) obviously be careful and be sure to hold tightly onto the fan and heatsink so as not to twist it too much while screwing the fan down (this is effectively forcing fins apart and putting a lot of pressure on the heatsink and chip if you are not careful) Also be careful not to let your screwdriver slip of you will have a new mobo mounting hole.

After the fan is secure (2 screws will do but if you can get in the full 4 then all the better, I only managed to get in 3) plug it in, test it and away you go.

Here are a couple of images that may be useful:
Exploded view
All removed parts

The first one is an exploded (rough) diagram of the heatsink and existing fan assembly and the second is a poor quality picture phone pic of the old fan, screws and cover with a ruler for indicative purposes.

The original fan was a truly poor design, it sits inside the heatsink, on top of the heatsink base so that any dust sucked into the fan will congeal around the fan mechanism and eventually clog it up and cause it to become inoperable, also it's tiny size, and fast spinning makes it ineffective and noisy and to top it off the fan cover seems to all but remove the chance of any airflow through the heatsink fins.

Overall a big mistake by Asus and a right royal pain for the consumer.

Anyway I hope I have managed to help someone with this.
Thanks for reading
Take care
Eric

Hi all

First post...............just to say thanks to all the previous posts and suggestions for solving this one.
Had been having the dreaded fan noise, and needed to give it the occasional 'prod' to get it spinning, couldn't believe the number of people having the same trouble but have now fixed it....... HOORAY!

I had contacted Asus and got (the next day!!) the 'new' replacement h/s and fan, but didn't have that much faith in it, so went with simpler option. Followed hellahulla's walkthrough and just replaced the stock fan with a 40mm x 10mm SilenX one. A bit fiddly but at least I didn't have to do the whole motherboard removal thing. So far so good and temps are fine and there's no screaming banshee living in my pc.

Thanks all

p.s.. .... not bad for a female?

So I have the same problem. Thanks for the solutions guys.

Now to the real issue: I don't know much about comps. so if I give you my setup, can you tell me what size and kind of fan i need?

here's what i got (I built this over the summer, picking components i liked.)
A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon64 w/heatsink fan
Samsung DVD-RW (TS-H552U)
Lite-ON DVD-ROM
1GB Corsair RAM - single channel (can't recall other specs)
2xGigabyte Nvidia 6600 256MB (each, SLI MODE)
generic floppy (cus you never know)
Maxtor 120GB AND Seagate 80GB (empty bay between them since i have room)
Ultra X-Connect 500W Modular PSU
And the Kicker: Windows XP x64 (so shoot me, I'm new at this)

So what will fit and work? I'm not much of a gamer, cus I need to get through college, but I don't like the idea of a fan not working. I used to have a pencil rigged through wires to give just enough pressure to the fan. It worked while the fan had at least some mobility. now the thing is dead. I'm looking for a inexpensive (not cheap) solution here. And hopefully something that doesn't include removal of planar board from case.

I can't pay you guys, but i can tell you an anecdote about this. I went into a big(ger) city to shop around for a chipset fan. after some research, i decided to see how smart people were. So i started asking at the Source and other stores if they had "A Northbridge Cooling Unit for a Planar Board." One guy told me to look at an industrial electronics store. the resident computer techie suggested he knew nothing when told of this. That's it for now guys, I'm anxious to read your replies.

For NB fan, my was really loud from begining. For stock speed Zalman ZM-NB47J work perfectly (I have intake 120mm fan at 1200rpm). For overclocking I put silent 40x10mm fan on the side of heatsink - jut use superglue . You will be able to use 2 cards in SLI. More expensive but better is swiftech MCX159 - you can use it without fan...

BTW, why 6600 SLI? You would do better with single 6800GT or X800GTO...
And go dual channel memory! Just my opinion, but it will help your performance...

Thanks for the advice, pawel. why 6600 SLI? mainly cus I was short on cash, and didn<t know there was that much difference. I thought it was good considering my former machine (Future Shop) had 64MB of shared Video Mem. Also, I don't do much gaming on it. At least yet, but I doubt I'll have much time for it in the future. Gotta go now, lotsa homework, but thanks again.
