A8N-SLI Motherboard

Hey, everyone. I'd just like to post some of my experiences with this motherboard. I see a lot of people replying to A8N-SLI threads with negative comments and things ala "this is the worst mobo ever" or "I've never had so much trouble with a motherboard in my life", etc. These are just some of my conclusions on this motherboard, and hey, maybe it will help you, too!

Power Supplies
The A8N-SLI is obviously very picky about power supplies. Before you lay the smackdown on the board, make sure you get a propper PSU. I'm currently using an Athena power 500watt power supply with 22amps on the +12V (which has worked very well for me; I'll give my whole system specs later on). There is a very good thread around here that specifies what power supplies are best.

Memory
The A8N-SLI is also semi-picky on the memory. Even though the Asus list of "approved" memory vendors is lengthy, there still remain many modules that would probably not work with the motherboard. With this said, I'd also like to address the overclocking issue. I have a Corsair TWINX512-4000PT kit (the cool silver one). I successfully overclocked it on a pre-1004 BIOS to 250 MHz (on 1T timings, yes 1T, with a multiplier of 9.0x, and HT of 4x, and 1:1 ratio or 400MHz); with the 1004 beta BIOS, I got the memory up to 260MHz (multiplier of 9.5x, and HT of 4x, obviously on 1T, and 1:1 ratio or 400MHz).

CPU
The most that I overclocked my 90nm 3200+ AMD 64 on the A8N-SLI Deluxe was 2.6GHz. This was done on 2T memory timings, but hey: you give some, you lose some. Anything above that, and it wouldn't boot into Windows (sometimes randomly reboot). That was with the pre-1004 BIOS. I haven't tried to simply max out my CPU with 1004 just yet, but keep it locked.

VGA + SLI
Even though I don't run in SLI at the moment, there is an issue with the EZ-Selector card. Make sure that you can fit it in properly. A number of times my computer would give me a VGA error simply because the SLI EZ-Selector card was a bit off (the pins were not touching, I suppose).

SATA
There are problems with Maxtor's, and I'm sure nVidia and Asus know about that. Also please note that pre-SP2 Windows XP does not recognize 200GB hard drives (I had about 80gb missing when I originally installed Windows). After you update Windows, though, you get the full space.

Windows and nForce4
There are issues with the nForce4 Chipset drivers and WindowsXP (Service Pack 2). I reinstalled Windows about 6 or 7 times this past week, simply because my Windows would not boot after installing the Chipset Drivers from Asus' CD. This is a problem (it might just be me, but I doubt it). If I don't install the nForce PCI Memory controller, everything seems to work fine. Please reply to this. I'm just wondering if other peope are having the same problem.

My Specs
AMD 64 3200+ 90nm
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
Corsair TWINX512-4000PT (rated at 3 - 4 - 4 - 10, running at 3 - 3 - 3 - 8)
PCI-Express BFG 6600 GT OCX (only one)
Kingwin AWC-1 Water cooling system (28° - 30° Centigrade idle, 35° when stress testing)
200GB Western Digital SATA
Phillips CD-RW 52X

Interesting Facts
I was able to tighten my memory timings to 3 - 3 - 3 - 5, but I can't achieve that with the 1004 BIOS.
I was able to get about 7800 bandwidth in SiSoft Sandra with a pre-1004 BIOS, but, unfortunately I forgot what the method to my maddness was. I think it was a clever combination between the HT Multiplier, the memory latencies, and the FSB, but I can't replicate the results (running at 260MHz memory just gives me about a 200-400MB/s boost. I will probably take some screenshots of that soon.
I run with the memory timings at either 1.90v or 1.95v.

Overall
I love the A8N-SLI Deluxe. Not only does it look good, but it's very stable. Plus, I like it because it gives you alot of overclocking ability. Personally, I beleive that it will give the new LanParty a run for it's money, especially with BIOSes coming out very rapidly. Asus delivered a top of the line board, in my opinion. It maybe be nit-picky, but it's worth every penny.

Great post! A very accurate summation of this board.

And great to see you get 260mhz 1T on the ram.

And I agree this motherboard is fantastic and will be hard for the competitors to top.
Definately the best I've ever owned.

Great post.

I've got to add a bit about memory. When using one DIMM it goes in B1. If you are using two DIMMs make sure they are a matched pair. If the timings of the two DIMMs are different, the board will give you memory beep errors and it won't boot. Also, even if you buy a kit with matching DIMMs, they might not really be matched, as I found out the hard way

Thanks guys

And yeah, great point smc13, I actually had a slight memory "problem", too, when I installed my modules. Good info!

Well I can't OC at all. If I do I get BSOD BUGCODE_USB_ERROR - several others get the same.

It runs absolutely stable at stock, is very cool (nothing reaches 40 under 100% CPU load), and the memory is OK with the OC, because memtest runs fine.

3DMark05 or EQ2 cause the BSODs however.

Despite it running OK at stock do I have a faulty mobo?

I'd need more information Thorsson, what version of Windows, what service packs, your system specs, etc to be able to help you.

PS: It's most likely not a faulty mobo.

I suspect you loaded the drivers before updating WinXP. The OS should have all critical updates installed before loading any drivers. Then, the chipset drivers should be installed before all other drivers.

Driver install sequence can be very is important. In this case, it is. There is a formal driver install routine for new compters.

I actually tried both ways, and installing every part of the chipset driver separately (the ethernet driver, the IDE driver, etc.). The PCI controller driver is problematic (at least for me).

I also tried the new version of the nForce drivers (released Feb 5th I beleive), and the PCI controller driver is still problematic.

I had this problem too... but then I had major trouble re-installing XP.. I would get errors like "cannot copy file" so many times... It is all 'cos of memory I guess... right now my system is stable with only one of the dimms in B1, earlier I had a pair of 512KB.. I tried it in A1, B1 and in B1, B2.. A1, A2 - is a big no no...

any idea on how to fix this memory problem ??

Thanks!

I would suspect that this problem is unique to the A8N, as I've built several Nforce4-based systems on other boards (non-Asus) without encountering this problem. The installation sequence mentioned by babyjocko may be required for only the Asus A8N, as it is contrary to the sequence I have applied on these other boards with complete success.

Just wanted to say I'm having no problems with a Fortron Source Bluestorm 400w PSU (dual 12v rails, something like 15a each), Mushkin Value RAM at 1T (not overclocked, but will take a mild overclock fine).

The 200GB in windows...that has nothing to do with the board correct? You do NOT have to get SP2 to see over 200GB in a drive. I use XP Pro SP1a and it detects my 250GB fine on my second PC. I refuse to install SP2 untill I see a real benefit, all I've heard is problems with it.

Any advice I have some Corsair xms pro4000 ram, I can run it at 240X11 1to1 but not 1T
I have to back it down to 3:4 ratio to get 1T.

Mems voltage is 2.75, I am thinking this RAM just wont do it oh yeah 3-4-4-10 are the timings.

I'm not sure that USB is working properly at all as there are one or two funnies - everything seems to end up on USB 1 rather than 2, for instance.

This is typical of installing WinXP on an overclocked system. Next time, before you try the install, run MemTest and make sure that you have enough voltage to stabilize both the CPU & RAM.
Don't forget that if you run it on the "edge", summer temps may destablize your Win environment.

I agree with Davv. Well, this is what I am running.

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
Koolance PC3-720SL (Watercooled Case)
Enermax CoolerGiant EG651AX-VH 550W PS
AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 (939)
2GB Corsair TwinX PC4400CP25
XFX Geforce Ultra PCIe (Single)
2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA 160GBs in Raid 0 off Sil. Raid Controller
1x Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA 120 GB SATA 1.5Gb/s 7200 RPM (Sil)
Creative Labs Audigy 2 ZS
D-Link DWL-G520 Wireless PCI Card
Creative Gigaworks S750 THX 7.1 Surround Sound System 700Watts

I've been building my own machines for about 15 years now. I am by no means an expert, but I know my way around a computer and how to get em up and running.

All that to say this.......this is probably the most stable system I've built in a long time. I haven't had ONE SINGLE ERROR......NOT ONE and this system has been running for about 2 weeks non stop, (No shut downs. An occasional manual reboot, 1-2 times a day, but by me, not by error) with Prime95, Defrags, 3dMark03, 05 and PCMark2004 running. I've literally tried to break this machine, because I'm in such disbelief that NO ERRORS have occured. This can't be right......I've OC'd the Proc to 2.6ghz (12X216 if I remember correctly {not in front of my machine right now}), and the 6800 ultra to 448/1166. ANd still no problems. I know those aren't heavy duty OC's but still.....it's amazing that I still haven't had one, not one error, of ANY KIND. The only complaint is the limitation of DDR400 when all slots are filled. It wanted to run at DDR333, but I got it to go at 400.

My 3dMark05 Score

I guess I'll order that second ultra and see what the deal is in SLI. Also, I must admit that the MB (Chipset) temps are higher than I'm used to. (I didn't by a cooler for the chipset) It's running under load higher than the proc 40-45C.

Anyway.......just my two cents.......I guess I lucked out.

ALSO, I will only use ASUS boards.....they've always been solid for me.

Also.......check it out......You MUST INSTALL IN A METHODICAL, PAIN IN THE ASS ORDER.

Windows XP
SP2 (I highly recommend ordering the disk from MS. They'll send it to ya for free!!) REboot
Asus Chipset drivers
Reboot
Raid Drivers
Reboot
Network
Reboot
Windows Update
REboot
Video
reboot
Sound
reboot
Blah Blah Blah......

Now I'm sure most of you guys do this....and maybe I'm just pissin in the wind here. But you'd be surprised by how many people install shit, and don't reboot. I know it's a pain in the ass, but REBOOT after you install anything.

If done slowly, methodically, this board kicks ass...

Again, I am no expert, but my machine is running great!!!

I hope people here know that if you're installing Windows XP (non-SP1, non-SP2) on a hard drive bigger than 137GB, then Windows will not recognize it. If you already have data previously on this drive, it'll be a pain because you probably won't want to install Windows on your "137GB" drive and lose your partitions. Of course there is a solution to this. You can use the nForce SATA controller drivers that come in the ASUS Drivers CD or the nForce4 Standalone driver package. Just copy from the \IDE\WinXP\ folder of the nForce package all the files (except the raidtool folder) to a floppy disk. I know not all the files are required but since everything fits into a floppy, I'm too lazy to figure out and then specify which are necessary. Then at the start of the install Windows XP, press F6 and wait for a prompt to specify any disk controller drivers.

I hope this makes reinstalling Windows XP less painful for all those who use >137GB hard drives as the boot drive. Windows XP SP1 does support >137GB hard drives but it still needs to be manually enabled through registry. I think SP2 just supports it by default.

As for my conclusions on this board, as much as I want to love this board, I can't say I don't feel upset about it. I've been having the same trouble that a lot of others in this forum are having: the intermittent POSTS, "System fail VGA test", Maxtor DiamondMax10 SATA incompatibility with BIOS 1003....

I am currently using the beta BIOS, 1004-001. The two hardware components that I suspect are causing me trouble are my RAM and sound card. I've seen threads that claim incompatibility with Audigy 2 and this board, but replies about successes with this combination. I actually have an Audigy 2 VALUE sound card which I haven't seen anyone discuss about. I question the compatibility because when I overclock over 230MHz FSB, 1:1 ratio, I can boot up my system until Windows begins to play my startup sound. I can take out the sound card or switch preferred sound device to the nForce audio and get a stable system that will run prime95, 3dmark03, and 3dmark05 fine. If anyone has an Audigy 2 VALUE and overclocks their system with this motherboard using beta BIOS 1004-001, please tell me of your experiences.

The other hardware in question, my OCZ PC3700 Gold Rev. 3, seems to lock up whenever I run PCMark04 memory tests. The system locks up and reboots when PCMark04 runs a 4MB Raw Block Write. I haven't found anyone who uses this RAM in combination with this motherboard. I also noticed that this RAM that uses Hynix DT-D5 chips is not listed in ASUS's QVL. Anyone who has this RAM and motherboard, please share your experiences.

For non-overclocked performance, I'm very satisfied with this motherboard. This motherboard is one of the most fully-loaded motherboards that I've seen. Good luck to everyone with this motherboard!

M$ charges shipping.
There is also the slipstream method Overclockers did one of the best that I remember.
Even though theirs is a ref. to using SP1, just do it the same way using the SP2 D/L and you'll have the SP2 WinXP install disk in your inventory - for free.
