A8N-SLI noisy heatsink

Everyone seems to have this issue, what's the best way to deal with it?

hmm only went through so many pages before i got fed up with following it all. it would be very nice if someone had a nice clean (and pinned? -there are so many of us) solution please.

Ok well here is a Link to one of the solutions. Your best bet is to Go for a Zalmen Northbridge cooler either one of their coolers will work.

well there were lots of solutions people were talking about, some required a little modding skills it seemed and some didnt sound nice, sorry for the hassle, and thanks.

In my case the weenie heatsink does the job and probably even better. I'm using Zalman VF700 on my video cards which is blowing right over that heatsink that's in the picture.

I would say the weenie is the chipset fan that Asus supplied with the board, I am using the Zalman, has more area to dissipate heat than the skimpy one asus supplied. I replaced my chipset fan before I even fired up the Asus for the first time.

In my experience, the best is to just swap out the fan. It is by far the easiest, cheapest, and best way.
Basicaly, unscrew the 4 screws, and the cheap fan comes off. Leave only the HS. Buy a 4cm fan. Attach it, and plug in where you pluged in the old fan. Done. I can't hear it at all, and the temerature went WAY down from what it was with the cheap fan.
Basicaly, since it runs at 4200 rpm, and is built MUCH better than the stock, it is silent. And it cools better because it is larger, and there is more airflow from taking out all the crap inside the HS.

I prefered this meathod because it cools better, is silent, adds only 1cm height to the original HS, I didn't have to take the MB out, cost me $7, and start to finish was 5 minites.

i have thought about that...but the clearence of my top right corner of the stock fan and the end of the 6800gt is less than 5mm...

I also take it..that there is not way to adjust fan speeds for chipset from Bios..or speedfan...apart from fitting a regulator...?

You could also do some cablework and set it to a 5V or 8V diet

Hey Niceguy, what fan did you use to replace the stock and where can i buy it? also, is the motherboard temp that probe reports the temp you are talking about that went way down (i think that is the chipset temp) and what are your temps, before and after? thanks!

Where did you get this cooler and what is the name of it? I need the lower profile one you have depicted here? The other Zalman has high fins in the middle and I use 2 Arctic Cooler Silencers and they would bump into the other Zalman depicted earlier by MatrixVPR.

I don't think it's the ZM-NB32J because when I look at Zalman's site it looks like there are seperate brackets that attach to the HS.

I think I bought an Adda fan, but it doesn't really matter. Small fans (normal ones, unlike the Asus one) are generaly the same and any will work well. Remember, it's all so small (the NB heat generated, heat sink, air flow) that its not rocket science.
As regards the clearance issues, another advantage of this meathod is that you can 'move' the fan a bit with no real loss in cooling. Use twisties to secure it to the HS pins, and move away from that testy top right corner.
R07, the temps of my MB went down, but those don't really reflect the NB chip. However, I felt the HS many times runnning test programs with the stock fan (warm), and after under exactly the same conditions with the replacement fan (NO heat). Blew me away.
