AAA worth it?

In my area, AAA charges $102 for one year of Plus membership. I can get a tow for that much, if not less, IF I need it. So why should I bother signing up?

It's saved my ass numerous times when I've gotten a flat on a dark busy road, and when my battery died on the hottest day of summer and everyone I knew with cables was at work. Plus, the maps and triptiks are a good bonus. And the opportunity to get foreign currency and travelers cheques for very cheap/free respectively, is a good deal.

It seems like a waste of money until you wish you had it.

I woulnd't in that case. I just renewed mine at $43/year for the basic. That covers a few miles tow plus $2/mile (or less I think) if it's further. I got it partly because towing is very expensive, and also because if I'm ever caught out in the middle of nowhere with only a cellphone I have a number to call for a tow. Further, I can save a portion of it each year when I do things like book hotels and get an AAA discount. If I had a brand new low mile car I wouldn't bother probably.

I drive old beaters . Even though I have only used them a few times in 12 years as aPlus member for towing, it is peace of mind for me and the discounts ( vary by region ) help lessen the impact of he " membership " fee.

Usually they'll deal and give you an extra month or two for the price of 12 .

With the Plus membership you can be towed up to 100 miles without any charges.

With any extended warranties on new cars free towing is also usually offered so it really isn't necessary on two of our four cars.

Both the wife and I have the Plus, we've probably gotten our cars towed a half dozen times in ten years that we've had Plus.

But, how much is peace of mind worth?

I beleive that if you do any distance driving what so ever on a monthly basis AAA is a definate way to go. You never know what can go wrong in the middle of nowhere and AAA is definately one of those peace of mind things that covers your ass if anything does.
If your just going to and from work its kinda pointless, unless work is one helluva daily commute

If you have verizon wireless cellular account, you can add this service, for like 3-4 bucks a month I believe which will give you Road Side Assitance.

If cars needed to be towed by their looks then perhaps the imports especially Japanese would be on top of that list.

AAA comes in handy if you drive a lot. If you are stuck somewhere without gas or spare then it could be a lifesaver.

Might not be as good as AAA+ and what do you do when there isnt service? Or if your cell phone is dead?

It's nearly impossible to not have signal with Verizon.
Also how are you gonna call for AAA ? If you find a payphone, you can conntact Verizon Road Side Assistance with it as well
