Hi,

Just got Abit NF8 mobo with new 3400+ cpu.
Installed it all -
cpu temp in BIOS shows at ~65 C

Not good.

Take off heatsink - it has stuck [through the thermal compound] to the cpu. CPU gets wrenched from the socket. Ouch.
Examine, 2 very bent pins . Manage to straighten them a little so they fit back into the socket.
[A bit worried about having a 752pin instead of a 754pin!]

Manage to get thermal compound over the cpu, between a couple of the pins etc.
Clean with isopropyl. almost.

Try reinstalling cpu/heatsink - fans spin, no beeps.

2nd Attempt - Take off heatsink [bit more carefully this time] = wiggle wiggle . CPU attached to the heatsink again.
Another bent pin. [only a little bit bent this time].
Clean off paste. Isopropyl followed by a good wash in cold water+washing up liquid.

AAARRGH.

Decide to give it a break for the evening to let the cpu dry.

Meanwhile back in the idiot cave...........
Look on ABIT forums, found a thread where a few ppl are discussing a BIOS issue where the cpu temps are incorrectly displayed.

boll#ux

Has anyone got a soft cushion i can hit?

The pins that I have 'straightened' are a tiny bit shorter than the rest of the pins, due to small kinks in them.
How much shorter can they be for the cpu to work?

Hi, Pidgeon Poo or grease is not electrically conductive. I'm not sure about the others, but they are probably non conductive too. Clean it up so it doesn't get into the socket. It may cause trouble there. I have straightened pins that were mashed flat against the chip and gotten away with it. A small loss of length is probably OK as long as they go into the socket. Twist the HS slightly before lifting it. You will feel the bond break, then lift. Luck, Jim

I made a big mistake.....

I didn't have any AS5, so, I went to the local store, and they sold me this really cheap paste that they 'use all the time without a problem'. It seems the twisting doesn't work with the stuff that was sold to me.

It's a BIT more sticky than AS, as i found out.

I'm now waiting for my new tube to come through the post before I put my 752pin (+2 little ones) cpu into the 754 socket.

It is possible that the cpu/mobo has been injured a little.

Any advice before I continue [in a couple of days]? Should I stroke the mobo lovingly, and wet its keyboard connector with a cool hankerchief?
Or whisper sweet nothings into the cpu's 752 [+2 little] pins?

You should return both the mobo and cpu and say that a manufacturing defect caused them to break after you disassembled them to return since they weren't working for some reason. Why should you pay for your inexperience when the company you purchased from could do so easily?

Trouble is that I couldn't prove that there is a BIOS problem with the temp.
There are only a few ppl on the forum that say there is, but a BIOS upgrade sorted out their problem.

There is no way to say categorically that my issue is to do with the BIOS. Could just be put down to clumsy, or cheap paste.
I've built many systems in the past - but this is my first AMD64. - No real difference apart from, it seems the heatsink isn't fussy about which way on it should go.

I like the way compusaguy thinks though.

But, ABIT don't seem to acknowledge the problem with the overheating - they just fixed it though!

Oh - just to say,

I don't care whether the cpu shows up wrong too much, as long as i know about the problem. Obviously it is an advantage [haha] to have the correct temps showing!
The mobo itself is sweet. [well, was sweet]
