According to my (on-it's-way) motherboard manual, inserting DDR2 into their DDR3 only slots may damage the components.

Now I have to wait even longer during the RMA process (Newegg)... my parts aren't here yet (should be Friday).

This blows

Theres a review of those that says

"Cons: still wont boot at rated speed, or 1333, or 1280, or 1111 Mhz without going into bios and resetting or making some changes. XPM profiles don't work either. Tried manual settings on multiple occasions, no-go. The only speed it actually booted to was 1066 Mhz by itself without additional. Only I can make this system boot, other family members not able to access this system"

I put an urgent ad on Craigslist see if anyone had similar ram but in DDR 3 to trade. If no response by the time I get them then I'll RMA.

a lot of ram + mobo combos have issues. you really need luck there, don't be afraid to RMA

that being said, ALWAYS reset the cmos after inserting new ram, it usually solves those issues (also upgrade firmware and try moving ram around to different slots, it also solves issues)

And its not just your mobo, DDR3 was never compatible with DDR2. so mixing them up would be a bad idea.

You shouldn't even be able to come close to sticking a DDR3 stick in a DDR2 slot. If your new RAM gives you any trouble, upgrade the bios.

That's the opposite way round to the issue the OP has though.

You need to slow your mind down on this build, or you'll screw something up.
I understand you now know that DDR2 won't fit in a DDR3 slot.
But if you weren't clear about what memory the MB supported, you may be skimming over other details that might come back and bite you.

It MAY damage components? Lol if you manage to get a DDR2 stick into a DDR3 board without damaging anything your pretty amazing.

to clarify, there are slots in there which are at different location. In order to insert DDR3 into a DDR2 slot you will need to cut it (which I am sure people have done before). If you just attempt to jam it in you will break it (or give up before breaking it when you see it isn't going in).

Pro tip: consult the mobo manufacturer's qualified vendor's list to minimize compatibility problems. In this case, the conspicuous absence of DDR2 surely would have prevented such a boner.
