That's weird, i have an N7 and it doesn't lag, the display is great and runs apps great.

Funny how Samsung is dominating Apple by themselves. WHY ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE BUYING AN UGLY PHONE? See ZTE's marketshare? That's going to be Apple in a few years, deal with it

Wow had no idea apple had this "small" of a share. I thought they had more like 95% considering everyone and their dog has an iphone these days. Good to see Android has a decent footprint. Apple probably makes a decent amount of cash just off the lawsuits alone though. The sales is just gravy.

What do you mean Google making nothing? I don't think people still understand how Google makes money off Android.

They're not making much. All they get is mobile revenue on maps and ads, but it's paltry compared to what Apple's getting. Mobile CPM is in the tolet. Plus most of the revenue goes to the carriers, including a large percentage of app sales. At one point Google was actually paying OEMs to use Android. I think Microsoft makes more off of Android than Google at this point.

The GS3 is an ugly phone.
Damm oval design all covered up in glossy plastic.
HTC is one stupid company.
Had they just made their One X with removable battery and sd card slot, then the SG3 would have nothing on the One X.
Bring the Optimus 4X here, I'll take that over the GS3 anyday.
So much sexier.

To be truly reminded of what people buy, I found the mix of phones laying around at a basketball court to be a good reminded of reality. A bunch of high schoolers were there from the high school basketball team.

Most had smart phones. I think I saw a Droid 3 in there. But I also saw one blackberry and a bunch of dumb phones.

I wrote an article recently so you can find this info on gurufocus.

In the USA There is a cell phone for each person in the USA right now. And 66% of them are dumb phones.

Tech nerds (like those on ATOT) with above average incomes are not a good cross section to get a gauge of reality.

At the end of 2011, India and China had some of hte worst smart phone penetrations in the world. China was 6% and India was 3%. Compared to the USA's 33%. Using the USA to gauge future growth prospects is pretty stupid. The market is highly saturated.

For countries with populations over 100 million, the USA has the highest smart phone penetration. But if you include smaller countries, about 15 countries have more penetration. I was surprised to see that one country (Singapore) had over 90% penetration.

Oh, and if you want to see an ugly phone look no closer than the S3:

Samsung needs to stick to designing refrigerators.

whats wrong with the S3? it looks like the iPhone and is getting better market reviews than the iPhone. Are you that much of a Apple shill that you cant see Samsung is smoking hot right now? if you cant acknowledge that you are doomed.

iMessage allowed me to save $10/month and Facetime has no easy parallel.

android has had video chat (via google talk) since Gingerbread/2010. It worked over wifi and 3g since day 1. it's also had IM via google talk since release in 2008, but that doesn't integrate with SMS the way iMessage does. It does have google voice for free texting though.

whenever you do give android another look, skip all the crap and just look at Google's Nexus line of phones.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Samsung, but the side by side comparison you posted is a fantastic reason for me to never buy it. You can pack 5x more fancy hardware in that phone, but it's twice the size and that's a deal breaker for a lot of people.

It looks like something some guy in Korea came up with who was trying not to blatantly rip off Apple's designs as was the MO for all the Samsung phones before it.

How am I doomed?

Youre comparing an iPhone 4S which was released last year to a Samsung Galaxy S3 which was released within the last couple months. I would hope they're selling better and getting better reviews.

I'm aware of those options, but I always had trouble getting them to work. My friends who leave google talk on all the time on their phones don't always get my messages (~5% of the time, not a big deal) and their status doesn't update consistently (also not a big deal). Personally, I don't like leaving google talk on all the time anyway, but that's just a preference. iMessage is certainly more primitive than google talk, but the functionality is there and the seamless integration with pics/videos is nice.

Re: facetime vs. video chat - I don't have an issue with video chat on Android, but it definitely wasn't as easy as facetime. My daughter (2 years old) knows how to call me from the iPad when I'm at work. When I first realized she was doing it on her own, my perspective changed quite a bit. That's when I decided I really wanted a phone that was easy enough for a 2 year old to do most things because I want everything to be quick, easy, and efficient. I understand there is a lot of personal preference here as other people like to tweak. I don't, though. It may also be easier to do this on Android now, so I'm certainly willing to take another look as this feature is very important to me.

Edit: this actually reminded me of something really stupid about iOS. Pro: it's easier to manage/delete/kill apps on iOS, but Con: there are apps you can't remove from the home screen that come built in. I HATE that. You can't even put them in folders to move them out of the way. I'd like to smack the person who made the decision to include Newstand on every iOS device.

But not most people.

Heck, even the iPhone 5 is going to be bigger.

Actually, yes, for most people. Most people are still using tiny dumb phones, so upgrading to a smart phone that is literally 4-5x bigger is a huge problem. A survey at my workplace indicated that most people don't want physically large phones. 3k people responded, so a fairly sizable pool. Right now, it's a deal breaker for a ton of people. Maybe it won't always be that way.

I suppose this has turned into an argument of who has a better phone, so I will chime in.

I didn't get a real smart phone (Samsung Focus S) until earlier this year. My sister has had an iphone (iphone 3GS to iphone4 something now). Initially the iphone was nice, but then after getting used to the Samsung (I know, a WP7 phone but the points still stand), I find that the Samsung is a much better phone for me. The screen is bigger and the phone is slimmer. I just don't really find the iPhone all that appealing with its small screen.

My $0.02.

I can't stand the pixel pitch on any of the bigger Samsung phones. It's basically the same amount of pixels in more space, which makes it less clear. Admittedly there are a few I haven't seen, but of the ones I have seen, it is much less clear than the 'retina' display. What you call small is perfectly sized for a lot of people, which was my entire point in my last post. This is the same argument as the guy at work who is pimping his 28" 1920x1080 monitor. Yes, it's bigger, and some people enjoy that, but it's certainly not better just because the diagonal measurement is bigger.

Speaking of phone sizes, I just have a small blackberry pearl that has a small screen, so I can pocket it if I'm wearing shorts. Jeans, not so much as those pockets tend to be too tight and it would crush it. For those that have bigger phones that is all screen, how do you keep it on you? Do you just use a holster at all times? I can't imagine pocketing a phone like that as it would put lot of tension on the screen.

If your Jeans can't fit a blackberry pearl in them than they are too damn tight. I'm not saying that because I buy baggy jeans from walmart. Even with a nice pair of well-fitting $100+ jeans I've never had a problem pocketing a smartphone.
