Bah. That's nothing. I hit my own car once, with my parents minivan. My freshly washed and waxed '68 Oldsmobile about 3 weeks after the brand-new paint job done by my dad (would've been a $5000 paint job from a shop). I backed the van out, turned and scraped my passenger's side quarter, about a 5" scratch down to bare metal. I thought my dad was gonna kill me for ruining that beautiful paint.

It was bound to happen. When she pulls the VeraCruz into the garage it's not uncommon for her to hit things on the left, or hit things on the right. Nothing that makes any damage. Stuff like snow shovels, bike, etc. She often pulls too far forward and hits the wall. I actually put some big rocks on the garage floor to prevent her from pulling so far forward.

Well, this AM she backed the car out of the garage and for some reason didn't pull STRAIGHT out. She ended up winging the passenger side rear view mirror on the door frame.

The whole thing shattered. And what sucks is it's one of those mirrors with the heating element for the glass, turn signal, side marker lights, etc. I called the Hyundai dealer and it's $850 just for the part... UNPAINTED! Then they have to paint and install it and that's going to cost even more.

Despite this my wife still wanted to drive the car. I said no way. She asked me to tape the glass back up into what was left of the housing, but I wanted a chance to better assess the damage before I let her touch the thing. Told her to take my car for now (wonder how she'll smash that thing up today.)

I disconnected the wires and pulled the glass off thinking that it might fall off the rest of the way on the way into the office this AM. But since I won't have the part for a week, I'm probably going to use some packing tape and strap the mirror back into place.

I just hate crap like this. If she was more careful this stuff wouldn't happen. Now it's going to cost me a small fortune to fix. I'm so frustrated with her.

You're way late to this party pal. I fought that fight about 12 hours ago.

Agreed. Plus go to some "Hyundai enthusiast" forum and hit up their forsale ads. There is always some nut putting $$$ non-standard mirrors on their car so you should be able to find the whole assembly. Check eBay too. I went the forum route when a freaking branch that blew off a tree took out my passenger side mirror assembly (same deal, heated, electric, etc). It was my fault of course but it was 5:30am going to work on like the 4th 12 hour day so I didn't have attention going for me.

It's not as though she banged up the car intentionally.

Exactly. It's a fairly large SUV, and a lot of garages are fairly small. Shit happens.

My wife ran over a soda display at a gas station while towing her brother's boat. That was classic.

Yeah, this exact thing happened to me in fact. My wife backed out and crunched the left side of my car a couple summers ago. My car!!! Not her car, my car!!! I was standing right there and watched it happen. I didn't yell, didn't curse, didn't do anything except help her move the car forward so as not to cause any more damage. We got the car fixed and that was the end of it. Hell, she was more upset about it than I was.

My wife means a hell of a lot more to me than some damned car. In 5 years you won't have that car anymore but you can bet that your wife will ALWAYS remember how you reacted/overreacted to this. How angry you were, if you berated her or if you made her feel like shit and she sure as hell would remember if you punched her in the face...assuming she didn't rightfully leave your dumb ass. God, I can't believe anyone would even suggest that quite honestly.

Good call but we don't know how the OP reacted. He probably posted here out of anger like people do when they DON'T react like an asshat in real life.

The wife took the sideview mirror off twice when we had a Tahoe. I believe her boss called it the death-mobile after she had to ferry him around all night in a snow storm.

We downgraded to a Traiblazer which she hadn't any problems with and now we've replaced that with a Prius. I think I'm free and clear.

Now, if the daughter could just back it up into the garage.

I don't get it. Does anyone think that jonnyGURU would really punch his wife? What's the purpose of changing the summary? Is ATOT soiled by the very thought of a man punching his wife? By changing the summary is some random wife saved from the violent intent of her spouse? Are we saved by the mods from exposure to some corrupting influence here?

There are many drivers, male and female, who have absolutely zero idea how to navigate a car moving backwards. They literally cannot make the connection between moving the steering wheel and the resulting change in direction. That is why parallel parking is so "difficult" that they won't even attempt it. Couple that with no spatial abilities, and this is what happens. Basically there are those who operate a car and those who drive it. Your wife is an operator.

The person with the apartment parking spot next to mine is unfortunately one of these people. It literally takes him four or five cuts to pull his car in next to mine, and I leave a lot of space because I am afraid he will clip me. He is ALWAYS closer to the line than I am, and he has already run his car into the support pole on the opposite side multiple times since he got his new Camry. I also saw him get into an accident on the freeway one morning (recognized him standing next to his car). He just doesn't understand how a car moves.

What the....

"Hey... Left field... I think this guy just came from way out by you... You want him back or....?"

All I am saying is that when she does things to piss you off, and makes you angry...think about how it will feel when she is not here to be angry at....if you have never lost someone close you may not understand...I personally have not but I have seen it happen to enough people I try not to take anything for granted.

Think about it...every time she gets into that car she could get hit by a drunk driver anytime, any where....or some idiot who being a jackass....and she could die...or worse....do you really want the last words you say to her to be you 2 arguing over a stupid mirror?

I see drunks on the road all the time....it is scary as hell.

People get off work at odd shifts and go to the bars before they head home....I have seen drunks on the road at 9 or 10 in the morning....nothing surprises me anymore.

When you think about it in that context you have a tenancy to realize that litte things like a mirror is just that....a little thing.

Man Hyundai parts are expensive! :Q

Some dork in an Expedition smashed the passenger-side mirror off of my Corolla & the replacement part was only $184 including the motor for the mirror & the heating element + color-matched ... all I had to do was attach it & glue in the glass.

My wife is an excellent driver. Unfortunately we live in NC where everyone drives like they are stoned.

Nope... still random. Sounds sort of like the thing William Shatner would do to prepare for a tear filled scene in a TV show. I can see it now, TJ Hooker, episode: It All Happened At Warp Speed. Scene 2, Act 4. Hooker's police car gets side swiped by bank robber's get-away car. Side mirror falls off. Camera on Shatner.... now! (thoughts in Shatner's head) *"Scruffy.. Why were you... playing in the road. Dog.... never.... had a chance. Tears... welling up.... in my eyes.... Must read next line....."*

No. But I never said we argued about a stupid mirror. Instead of getting angry at her, I came onto ATOT and posted about it. Now what's going through MY WIFE'S head when I get killed by a drunk driver is how her late husband didn't get mad at her at all for knocking an $850 side view mirror off a 6 month old vehicle.

My wife called me at work last night to find out how much the damage was (I hadn't talked to her since the incident. She can't take calls at work). I told her and she was pretty hard ON HERSELF. So at least she acknowledges she was a bone head. Even volunteered to not park in the garage anymore (which I told her she could still do because I can't stand the sight of her cleaning snow off her car in the morning.)

Time to start up the Hyundai VeraCruz Side Mirror Fund.
