You did the right thing John. FYI: If you should need to use your Allstate coverage here's what I recommend. Register on the website and don't lose your account info. Installing the app on your phone is a good idea. Use it for the initial coverage attempt. If you get rejected or they tell you to, that's when you call.

Sometimes it's a smooth and easy process with them. Other times it's like you are dealing with tier one tech support reps that have a rejection quota to meet. If the initial attempt fails, make them kick you up to tier 2 the second attempt.
Thanks - Great advice!

So, I ordered a refurbished Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Master AX for $99 with a 90 day warranty from Newegg.

The board came yesterday. I was really impressed with the board! It is HEAVY and I didn't know MBs could be this heavy. Well, I carefully set it up with my i9-10850K. I'm very sad to say that it reacted just like the ASUS board.

First, I set it up to go into the BIOS using the on-chip GPU. It came up fine and I figured my problems were over and that the CPU must be good. Then I installed the M.2 NCMe boot drive. Just like before it went into a loop stating that it was starting recovery process, which it never did. I tried booting from a USB Flash drive and again it reacted just like the Asus board. I could see the drives in the BIOS, but the system would always to into a loop trying to boot.

All I can figure is that the CPU is the culprit. It must not be totally dead, but something must be fried. I was really concerned that my M.2 drive was damaged and I have programs on it that I can't reinstall like Photoshop CS5, that I bought when I was a student in 2010, after retiring. So, I bought an aluminum M.2 NVME Enclosure that supports USB 3.2 Gen 2. I plugged it into my HP laptop to copy stuff off of it. To my SURPRISE I was able to boot into Windows 11 on that drive! I went ahead and copied stuff to a portable HDD. There is hope that it will work again someday!

Now, what to do? 1. Easiest to do is to buy an 11th Gen chip to work on the refurbished Z590 board. 2. Return the new board for a refund, then take that money and buy a 12th Gen Intel or latest AMD combo from local Micro Center.

What is crazy is if I buy another i9-10850K CPU, which is one of the cheapest options, without going below an i5-10600K or i5-11600K., I'll spend around $200- $250. That money plus the refund gives me at least $320 to work with. I can add a little to that and get a i7-12700K, MB and RAM combo for $350, or an AMD R7-7700x, MB and RAM combo for $450. Both options give me features & speed I wouldn't get with buying a chip.

Thoughts?

Send the board back. RMA the 10850K, it should still be under warranty. Then sell the replacement. If you do productivity stuff the "i7-12700K, MB and RAM combo for $350" is a strong choice. If gaming is the focus, for similar money you can get the 5600X3D combo, which uses less than 90W max. It will make a powerful and cheap gaming combo. With either setup, if they only give you 16GB of ram, you can sell that and use the stuff you already have. Or double what's in that Zen 2 box.

I like the way you think! As soon as I finish this msg I'm headed to the UPS Store with the MB, all boxed and ready to go back.

90 Watts, eh? Hmmm...I got so tired of having a PSU that was barely enough for my GPU, that I bought a 1200 Watt one a few weeks ago. That plus the AIO I picked up on the same trip to MC should keep that 12700K at peak performance. Do I need it? No, but it just sounds so much more imposing than the 12400F.

You may also wanna get the contact frame: https://www.amazon.com/Thermalright-Contact-Retrofit-17XX-BCF-Generation/dp/B0BB22P6P1

It may help reduce the temps. Even if it doesn't, it will prevent your CPU from bending over time and causing slight thermal issues, due to the rectangular shape of the CPU that Intel probably overlooked when designing the LGA1700 socket.

The problem with 12700K is only four measly E-cores. Fine if you will disable them but if you want to use them for background encoding etc., they are not adequate. You may want to consider the 13600K. It loses two P-cores but makes up for it with eight E-cores.

13600K also gives you a lot better gaming performance due to more cache.

WOW...that one is half the price of the Thermal Grizzly contact frame! I was aware of it as it is pushed on a few YT tech channels. 13th Gen is under consideration. Whatever I get I plan to keep a long time as I was hoping to keep the 10850k and the 4790K before that.

Then I would suggest waiting for Raptor Lake Refresh, if you can. It's only like three or four months away.

I'd like to get the system back up and running before the grandkids get here in 2 weeks. Before returning the refurbished board I did an excercise to see what a CPU would cost me on that platform. That was when I realized it made more sense to return the board and get something newer.

After my 15-mile bike ride this morning I started analysing the combo deals on MC. They seem to be putting some less than desirable boards with those combos. There was one that stood out as something I'd like to buy. Can you tell which it is?

No, but it looks like a target of $500.

If going Intel you should at least go with ADL or RPL like your second table. If you want to open the door for Gen 5 devices ASRock has a board that does both drive and pcie called the Velocita @ $350

I was looking at Intel as my broke stuff is Intel. So, I thought I just needed a new MB, but now it looks like the CPU was the issue. So, I'm open to AMD as well. I did rule out the stuff over $550 as this range is already more that I need.

CPU, mobo and RAM are all great for the 7900X/ROG Strix combo. Guess you gonna go for that. Not a bad choice

Gets you probably Zen 6 about 5 years later too, on the same mobo.
Yep, that is the only combo that impressed me. Also, as you indicated it is a bit future proof.

I think I'm headed there tomorrow morning, assuming the wife agrees.

IMO, pay attention to components on the board as well. If possible, try to avoid any board with the Intel i225/226 LAN chips. They can be problematic. 6 months after building with the MSI Z690 Tomahawk DDR4 and i5-13600k, I STILL have to stop occasionally and reboot, either to regain my LAN functionality or the sound.

I picked up the Ryzen 9 7900x combo yesterday. I miss the power button that was on the Aorus Master, otherwise the B650E-F MB is great. I was able to turn on XPO in the BIOS and it worked the first try. The combo price is what the 7900x CPU's MSRP was at launch. I wonder how MC does it as you are not forced to buy a bunch of other stuff while in the store?

My 1TB M.2 boot drive would not work, while booting it also said it needed to enter repair mode. Unlike with the previous attempts it actually did. Nothing I tried fixed it. I tried booting from USB Win 11 install disk and repairing, then ended up wiping and reinstalling and it didn't work. I attached a 256GB SATA SSD that had been used on other system in dual boot mode Win/Linux. It had only Mint Linux installed. Widows could not use it. So, I tried installing Linus Mint, but until I manually deleted the partitions and recreated them Linux wouldn't install. So, I've ordered a new M.2 SSD that will be here tomorrow. In the meantime I can play Linux.

Linux Mint does not have drivers for Radeon Graphics yet. So, there is no video hardware acceleration. Things like YouTube work, but I've had 2 Firefox tabs crash. After going through Windows install with both 10 and 11 multiple times yesterday, then installing Linux Mint I'm really impressed at how some things just work better on Linux. With Linux you boot into it from USB drive, then it sees that you have WiFi and wants to connect. I press WPS button and instantly I'm connected with no need to type in password. You can run it like that to check it out, then you click an icon to do the install.

Before heading out yesterday morning I read a review on PCWorld for the 7900x and they made a big deal about the TDP being really high. I was concerned that the 240MM AIO would not be enough to cool it properly. I actually asked a manager at MC about taking the 7700x from another combo, he said that couldn't be done. On my 1.5 hour ride home I remembered that ECO mode can drastically reduce the heat and not make that much difference in performance. So, that relieved my angst. As you can see from the picture below, I'm doing my setup with a Noctua air cooler and no issues.

Well, all I can do now is await the M.2.......

Yeah, Linux WiFi support has improved a lot. Tested the Clear Linux USB boot on a Dell Latitude 3420 and everything worked nicely. Couldn't believe that I was browsing the internet in less than 5 minutes after boot. Excellent way to use as a secure browsing OS where you want to do something critical, like access your online banking portal etc., without worrying about any malware left behind and embedded deep within the OS, from your previous browsing adventures.

If Linux Mint is already installed to your SATA SSD, why not install the Radeon Graphics package from AMD and test out that functionality?

Regarding M.2 SSD not working, maybe you should update to the latest BIOS version and try again? Or install it in some other NVMe slot.

I am no Linux expert. How would I install those drivers? When I go into the driver manager, it does not show that any are needed or available.

Once I get the system working I'll see what Samsung Magician says about it. I think it had the latest BIOS.

I just updated the MB BIOS and it seems to be working fine.

I'll see how it goes when I get the new SSD with Windows before exploring POP OS. Everything I read is that Linux doesn't do well with Radeon Graphics integrated graphics in my chip.
Why aren't you using the 6900XT in your sig?

I'm waiting until I have the system running properly before putting it in the new case as the GPU covers up the M.2 slot. Then I'll put in the 6900XT. The case is so heavy especially with the new PSU, that I really messed up my back trying to work with it and connect up all the RGB.

Did you try doing a secure erase on the m.2? I wonder if there was some leftover partition or something that was hindering a new Windows install. Anyway, if you ordered a new one, that is just as well with good PCIe gen4 drives being so cheap even. Good luck.

I feel your pain. Same thing happened to me. Didn't think a mere case could do that to me. Being hunched over for several hours over the case and then having to carry it around (almost 15 kg) was too much for my back. Worse, I was sleep deprived too. I thought, oh it should take two hours tops. Ended up being 5 to 6 hours :S

My budget box doesn't have a Samsung SSD. So, I had install Magician on it and connected the M.2 using a USB enclosure. Magician sees the drive, but says it can't secure erase it. I forgot the exact wording. Bottom line is that it was a FAIL. I'll try again when I get the new system working on the new SSD.

My wife was out of town visiting family and I wanted to get it all done before she got back. Yeah, I didn't tell her I was buying more stuff. I was working on the new case on the island in the kitchen, which she would not have liked either. Well, it took MUCH longer than expected and I was standing the whole time. I felt under pressure to keep going even after my back started to hurt. It took over a week with Naproxen to get to where I was able to kind of function. The joys of aging!
