Imagine that... make dumb policies (that only last 10 days and net you ZERO returns) end up costing your state a HUGE international trade link.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's (R) 10-day-long "enhanced" safety inspections of commercial trucks entering the state from Mexico may have cost Texas $4.2 billion in economic damage, as estimated by Waco-based Perryman Group, but it's been great for business in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, a border crossing just across state lines from El Paso.

Trucks were re-routed through Santa Teresa when Abbott's inspections snarled commercial traffic at Texas border crossings, and now Mexico has decided to move a long-planned trade railway connection worth billions of dollars from Texas to the New Mexico crossing, The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday. "We're now not going to use Texas," Mexican Economy Minister Tatiana Clouthier said. "We can't leave all the eggs in one basket and be hostages to someone who wants to use trade as a political tool."

Clouthier made her announcement in Mexico City on Thursday, a day before Abbott said he will be transferring another $500 million from other Texas agencies to finance his broader state border initiative, Operation Lone Star, which is already costing Texans more than $2 billion a year.

Every time, all across the country. GOP is inciting outrage for reelection in the backs of taxpayers. Countless audits and recounts. Disney tax status. Blocking ACA. It's all the same.

When with the GOP decide its time to govern and push America to a better place?

Doesn't matter, until voters punish them, they will continue to do it and get away with it and even increase their political capital in the process.

Were I California I'd probably be making a case to the Mex gov to upgrade the rail links to Calexico.

Yep, as long as they can convince their base that they are ‘fighting the good fight ‘ they will be rewarded with re-election.

Costs his state multiple billions of dollars in two separate ways, and can't keep the lights on. Sounds like a winner.

I'm sure a big reason Mexico wanted Texas or New Mexico was to have good access east of the Rockies, and not have to rely on a existing few passes. However, there is no reason we shouldn't be expanding other rail connections. Truck traffic is extremely damaging to roads and environment.

No need to, they have power and are in a position to fulfill their real purpose of making the rich richer. Everything else is just window dressing towards ensuring their ability to fulfill that mission.

Yes I did not mean as a replacement for T-Mec. Otay East is getting ready to open which will bring yet more trucking. Having improved (and somewhat redundant) access to the US market and Canada through friendlier states would probably be a wise investment.

“But I hear he bussed loads of [insert racist term here] over to Washington DC, so fair trade!” - majority Texan voter

The state had to get those immigrants permission to bus them somewhere else. The ones that accepted were going that way anyway so they are like "free ride, you saved me bus fair, thanks Abbott and TX."

Meanwhile ERCOT just sent out a notice to the market that due to a day in the high 90s later this week generation may be insufficient to meet demand. Lots of thermal sources offline (gas, coal, nukes).
