Abit BH7 and P4 2.4b troubles?

I just got my Abit BH7 and my intel Pentium 4 2.4ghz B version processor in the mail (mentioned it in the thread regarding the Abit mobos and in another thread regarding my overclocking setup). I used to have a 1.6a overclocking setup before, and except for a new Antec 430 watt TruePower powersupply that i have used in other systems and that i know works and the mobo and processor mentioned above, all the parts are the same (HDD, DDR RAM, DVD-ROm, Floppy, etc.).

Here's where my troubles started. I had installed a heatsink that required the original heatsink-bracket to be removed (Alpha PAL8942). I know my cooling system is great because i have this heatsink coupled with a thermaltake SmartCase fan 2. However, i turned on the computer, all the fans work, the mobo lights are on, and then, after like 3 to 5 seconds, it shuts off, without showing a thing on the screen. My Radeon 9700pro isn't to blame, because its working great. Does anyone know what my problem might be? (i suspect that i might have done something to the processor)

-Also, once i get this up and running, in this thread i'll report my results because the person who started the Abit mobo thread in this category wanted me to.

Thanks for all your help everyone.

You will most likely have to reset your CMOS to get back into your BIOS but once there, see if you have "Shutdown on CPU Fan Fail" Enabled. If so, disable that, save and exit.

Just a thought.

i'll try that, but does anyone know what the signs are of a dead CPU that was either shoccked or damaged. I hardly even touched my CPU and was always grounded, but still. Just wondering.

One thing, sorry if this sounds like i don't know a lot, but couldn't i try to hold the "insert" key while it boots first before i start playing with the CMOS?
Also, my mobo booklet should have specific instructions on how to reset the CMOS, right?

should be a jumper on the board ~ just clear it

while your in there make sure all plugs are seated firmly in their sockets too

Yes your book will have that. If you have questions about the BIOS settings just ask. Definitely read the manual though, it's not complicated. It'll show you exactly which jumper and instruct you on what to do.

I'm back, i just checked something and i wanted to see what you all thought before i cleared the CMOS. The mobo has two indicator lights,
one for the powersupply being turned on, the other for the system itself being turned on. THe power supply one works fine and is green when the power supply switch is on. THe other one
for the system turns red when i turn on the system. What do u think of this? Should i go ahead with reseting the CMOS anyway, because it doesn't say in the manual what color these
Status LEDs have to be.

Alright, i just looked at my manual and it has a diagram of what jumpers to change, which is easy. To i just change the jumper to the "clear CMOS" position,
then after 3 seconds or so, with the power completely off just put the jumpers back the way they were by default? Or do i have to turn it on once after i've changed the jumpers?

That is normal for the BH7. Do you have another mobo to try the processor in? How about a different stick of RAM?

I can try a different stick of RAM. Also, i'm very sure the mobo is fine, otherwise those lights wouldn't be on at all. What do u think about the processor being dead?

Well..... My smoked 2.53 does the same thing as yours when I try it in my IT7. :frown: In my case, both the BH7 and 2.53 bit the big one. Try your other stick of RAM. Move it around each slot and try to boot. Also take your rig down to just the processor, RAM, and 9700 if you have not already, then try it.

EDIT: Also make sure that nothing in your case (stand-offs?) is shorting out the BH7. You can also pull the HS to make sure that it is making proper contact.

k, thanks, i will. Also, i have a stick of Samsung true DDR2700 from newegg.com with heatspreaders. If the proc. is smoked, then i'll just have to get a new one i guess. Well, hopefully it isnt

i'm back a little early because something happened. I unplugged all the IDE cables, floppy cable, and USB header cables. I booted it up with the case off and it started making long beeping noises. I have no idea what this beep-code means. Does anyone know?

Add me to this list.

BH7 - P4-2.4b
ATI 8500DV
2 sticks 512 -2700 crucial
365W Enermax

MY very first build.
Everything was fine. No overclocking. Ran 3 or 4 hrs. I was installing software. AND IT SHUT DOWN.
I have read the manual 10 times. Cleared CMOS all 3 ways (several times) except pulling the battery.
I push the START button and it runs ONE NANO SECOND and SHUTS DOWN. I have checked every
power connection. I can't get to the BIOS to change the thermal protection settings.

Thermal Protection? If it shut down after running for hours AND has had 2 hrs to cool down AND still
wont run. Does that mean the BIOS is permanent ly in a Thermal Protection error mode?

Is it RMA time or what? I am sick about this.... My first build and I researched this board.
I have bookmarked this forum and need someone to step up and solve this.... thanks......

There should be a list of all the meanings of the different beep codes in your mb manual. Of course, if you'd gone with asus you'd get the cool post reporter chick

You must have a fan with a rpm monitoring lead on fan header #1

Its the only way you can initially boot with that board.

Its from the fan thermal guard sensoring, by default there disabled but upon your first boot you have to enter the bios anyway and save changes.
