I have a BX6 rev2, and just got a 566 fcpga celeron malay. I use a super slocket slot 1 converter, when the system boots the cpu posts at 556 and says that the cpu is unworkable or has been changed. I need some help.

Make sure you have a slot adapter that is for a FC-PGA processor. Set all jumpers on the slot adapter to "auto" if possible and make sure you have the latest BIOS for that motherboard.

I had this same board running a 566cel overclocked to 850. I used the Abit slotketIII adapter. You have to have the newest BIOS too.

I don't have the latest bios their link isn't workin, I had set the jumpers on the slot adapter to auto, same problem, then set them to Intel, same problem. Could it be the Bios?

Also when it posts it shows as a pentium III not a celeron, which is what it is.

I think you are fine. I also have a BX6-2 running a Celeron 633. Just make sure you have the latest bios update.

Everytime you put in a different CPU, it gives that error message. Just go into the BIOS (del key) and exit, and you should be up and running. As someone above suggested, turn off the "Speed error hold" (I don't remember the exact wording) in the CPU setup screen of the bios.

And don't worry if it calls it a P3 instead of a celeron.

Yep, it just the Speed Error Hold. I've got a 633 and 566 Cel2 on BX6 Rev2 boards. No problem, also no problem with 100fsb.

Where can i disable the processor error? Will it harm the CPU? Will the CPU run correctly? The most recent bios update i could find was for 12/99 although Abit has a link for 5/00, but the link doesn't work. Know where I might find it?

Open your BIOS menu. Open "Soft Menu II". Look down the screen and set "Speed Error Hold" to disabled.

To get your BIOS update, go to Abit BX6R2 Bios page and read all info. I was just at this site, so I know it is working. You will have to go to the main page and also download the following files to complete the BIOS flash. These file are for the bootable diskette you need to make to upgrade the BIOS. AWDFLASH.EXE, and the BIOS file you just downloaded from the above link. Make sure you understand what and how to flash BIOS before you start. Print out the instructions and make sure you understand them because once you start the flash, there is no stopping it. Link to instructions: BIOS update guide

Good Luck!

Most bang for the buck on mobo's for overclockability, i'd say the EPOX 8KHA+, it goes for well under $150.
For RAM, get either Crucial or Corsair (crucial should be much cheaper), you should be able to get over a 50mhz total overclock. You should be able to get the FSB up to at least 145 from the default 133 setting. The multiplier on the XP1800+ is 11.5 i believe, so this gives you 145*11.5=1667.5mhz, a good 133mhz overclock from the default 1533mhz

Got the celeron in working at 566. I have it overclocked at 850. Sometimes when win98 is loading up it freezes in the win98 picture just before it actually loads. Is it a stability issue for the cpu? If I bump the voltage up from 1.70 to 1.75 will it fix this. The celeron is running at 47 celsius with heatsink.

It may simply need some additional voltage to get stability. The Celeron2's overclocked ran a little hotter than some others. I find the high 40's acceptable but prefer lower. If you are not running a 'CPU Idle' type program - I recommend them. My favorite for older CPUs is Rain2.0. It's small, causes no noticable performance hit and will dramatically reduce the CPU temp most of the time. It will still reach the same peak at full load (like running Quake etc) but the lower average temperatures is good. I've had the C2s up to 1.8V with no problems. BTW, if it still is unstable with higher voltage - no reason to keep it there.

I do recommend an aftermarket Heat Sink. Alphas are great (but expensive). One unit is using a $12 Golden Orb and has been rock steady for a long time now (it's a BX6-R2 with C2-566 running at 850). You'll need a heatsink compound - cheap silicon based stuff can be had a Radio Shack for a few bucks. Great stuff like Arctic Silver 2 or 3 can be found online for $4-7 (SVC computing and many others).
