I have an Abit Bx6 v2 running a celeron 566.

I want to upgrade to a higher CPU (something like a celeron 850). Abit's website says that this board only supports up to 700 MHZ though.

I am confiused because, I thought I was reading about people overclocking this chip and board up to 850?

I guess I'd like to know what my options are. Can I go higher then 700?

Thanks!

If you want to run that chip at 850, you need to set the fsb to 100. The 566 runs at 66mHz (8.5x66=566). If you set the fsb in the bios to 100, you get 850mHz (8.5x100). In all likelihood, you will need to give the voltage a bit of a bump to keep the chip stable, but if you don't overdo it and your cooling is adequate, you should have no probems.

You can run higher than 850 MHz. You can run any 100 MHz FSB Coppermine PIII or Celeron including the 1.1 GHz. You can also run a 133 FSB cpu, but your AGP will be out of spec @ 89 MHz. Some video cards are ok with this, some are not. You also have to be sure your ram is rated for the higher FSB speed.

Yep, I have the 566 running at 850mhz right now.

I *think* it probably runs somewhere around a P3-600 overclocked at 850mhz because I vaguely remember a website's review/benchmark that mentioned that.

Anywaz, if you are not satisfied and want to purchase an entirely new cpu, you could go the easy route and just purchase another celeron, but I am not 100% sure if you could run the newer 1.1 Ghz Celerons. Although your motherboard could run the bus speed necessary for a 1.1 Ghz Celeron, your motherboard might lack some neccessary requirements or features.

I recommend that you do a full upgrade as I am planning on to.

Abit BG7
Pentium 4 1.6a Cpu (overclock to 2 ghz+)
512 DDR333 Ram

The total will about around $300-$400. It'll last you much, much longer.

I'm running a Celeron 1.2 gig Tualatin Celeron with the Powerleap adapter on my ancient Bx6 R2 in a really cramped Inwin A660 (same as A500). In windows, it reports my chip is running at 1204 mhz, but on the initial bootup the bios reports it only goes up only to 1152 mhz. The only way a Tualatin Celeron is able to run on Bx board is to modify the slot convertor or the powerleap adapter. I opted for the latter since it's getting harder these days to find slot convertors.
