THG specifies BIOS 1.1 at the top of the Abit section...

I am surprised at the results of the THG shootout-usually, he seems to make sure the products he's testing aren't faulty samples but from his description of the Abit board I almost get the impression he got a dud-the faulty NB fan, the thing with the AUX connector, the BIOS freezes...and maybe the new BIOS wasn't flashed properly either?

Edit: I had been planning on getting the IC-7 today (it has just arrived at a local dealer) but perhaps I'll hold off for your review and roundup. I haven't decided on some of the other components anyway. However, I already got the Kingston HyperX 3500, so I'm wondering how that'll do in the memory section of the roundup?

Eh, he's just generating hits. Tom is 'generating' some serious memory problems, but they're easily solved with this step:

1. Replace user, press any key.

FWIW, I've not had a single problem with my IC7-G. I've got Crucial(Samsung) pc 3200, 2 sticks in mine, didn't have to touch anything related to memory timings.

It just worked, out of the box.

or
2. Pay up corruption money before review hits the web

I swear I havent been there since the late 90's

Tom is a once an idiot always an idiot. Why bother with someones review like that when it's obvious it's flawed. I myself go by all the users that actually use the board and can tell me what kinds of #'s they are getting. I'm pretty sure you can formulate your own opinion by the findings of others, and not some "hardware" site like toms

If you look at who reviewed the first part, Tom had nothing to do with it?, some editor did it along with someone who isnt even in the contact list on their site?!

Bert Töpelt < not even on contact list http://www.tomshardware.com/site/contact.html !

I remember reading tomshardware.com in the late 90' and his site rocked, maybe Tom has taken on too many people who arent up to his standards of the late 90's

I kind of agree with Tom's review. I returned my Abit after it died during a BIOS flash. I was using Kingston ECC DDR400 which it did not like, had boot problems etc.

I replaced it with a Gigabyte board, same memory and CPU and it was happy, even with the first BIOS. The ICG-7 has nice specs and engineering design, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

So let me see if I'm interpreting the general consensus here...THG is not well liked?

Seriously, I only know what I've heard. One of the beautiful things about AT is that they post links to reviews on other sites (including THG) so we can see who get's what numbers, and if any of the Anandtech staff is reading this post...THIS IS A GOOD THING! It sets this site apart for two reasons:

1) As was already pointed out, every test setup is a different set of variables. The fact that AT tells us what everyone else is saying helps us make better purchase decisions.

2) Have you ever seen a TV station point their viewers to a competing station? No. The fact that AT can link to "competing" sites is further proof that they're not afraid to stack their word against someone elses, and are looking out for consumers like us.

Given our mutual love and respect for Anandtech, I trust they have a good reason to link to them. This does not neccesarily lend credibility to THG, but I guess it means, for one reason or another, that what they say is of importance to Anandtech readers (if only to fuel the "Tommy-Knocker" threads )

I have always like AT site and reviews better from the getgo. I will be interested in how the IC7-G rates since I was excited about it until I actually tried to use it. It just was flaky from the getgo.

If only the Gigabyte 8A-KNXGP had the same rear I/O connectors as they Abit, I would think it's pretty near perfect from design standpoint. Of course, OC is another story.

Tom may be an arrogant jerk, but his reviews are top notched. And no site produces more quality review content. I dislike his demeaner, but his site is easily one of the top 2 or 3 IMO.

Tom isn't even involved in 1 out of 50 reviews posted on his site, and most of their reviews are screwed up one way or another.

I've had an IC7 for 2 weeks, and it's an excellent board. First BIOS revision (1.1), and I can already say I don't have a single problem with anything.

The only problem I have are grotesquely high reported CPU temps which has been talked about all over the net.

Yeah, well if it comes from his site, then I associate tom with it. We all have been to numerous sites like these, I don't recall any as bad as toms or none that were so bad that I even want to remember. Like I said I don't even bother with the "reviews" on the front pages of any of these sites. I always head straight into the forums and make my decisions based on what users have to say taking into account different setups etc etc... I know of many individuals that I would consider to have the knowledge to test and report back what they find. One guy, one review, nope, need many...

Well, considering what I have heard for people, and what I have seen on other reviews, the IC7-G rocks, so that is what I am finally ordering tomorrow.

Anybody remember SharkyExtreme? (before the buyout)

I've been a long time reader of Sharky, Toms, and AT. Now that Sharky is gone, I'm left with only two sites on my list. I read them both and compare results to come to an average consensus.

So what I'm getting at is,, don't be so hard on Tomshardware. We need his site along with AT so that we can pull honest assesments for the hardware we buy.

btw, As an IS7 owner I admit it was hard to read the results.

When did Sharky get bought out?....I noticed a while ago that that site wasn't really posting very much new info and I quit checking out as often as I used to. I used to enjoy that site alot!

nice review, except at the very end. That part about buying a sis655 mobo if you've only got a 533Mhz FSB proc isn't right, imho.

I don't see any point in buying a sis655 chipset mobo at this point in time.

Finally got around to ordering all of my stuff from newegg and provantage. Mobo Abit (IC7-G), cpu (2.8GHz 800FSB), Mem (Corsair 2x512 PC3500C2), HD (WD1800JB), fans (Case TT Smart Case Fan II and HSF TT Spark 7) from newegg, and case and power supply from Provantage. SX1000II for 35, and trueblue for 89. I might have to get longer round cable cause the ones that come with the Abit look too short to reach my DVD and burner drive at the top of the case.

Very similar to my system, Wurrm. IC7-G, 2.8c, 2xCorsair 512 PC3500C2PT. Got an LL Warrior case from Xoxide and an Antec True 430 power supply. 80GB Seagate Barracuda, SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum, Plextor CD/CDRW/DVD drive, floppy. I'll add a small HD later for RedHat. Radeon 9700 Pro with a Zalman heatpipe cooler for it.

Nice setup. There is a funny thing about my setup, I am only going to have a GF3 Ti500 until I either get a 9800 pro 256mb or a FX5900U. By rights I probably should have sat on what I had until the 5900 rolls around, but I was sooo eager I had to get one of these things.

I love how Anands review almost blatenly opposes Tom's. I think Toms review had a bad mobo, wrong bios, or something.

What about HARDOCP i am a big fan of there site, the three i always look at are Anandtech.com, Toms Hardware, and HardOCP.

Yea its too bad, about Sharkyextreme. I remember it had really good forums some very helpful people there, i wonder if they are still there?
