Abit IP35-? and DDR2 1000

I am doing a new build and it will be my first build and my first experience with overclocking. I am getting an E8400 and would like to run it around 4.0 Ghz - 4.2 GHz on an Abit IP35-Pro or IP35-E. In order to do this it has been recommended that I get DDR2 1000 Ram to be sure that the FSB speed is high enough to accomodate this processor speed.

I have read more than once in this forum of people having trouble getting their Abit IP35-? board to post out of the box with Ram running at more than 1.8V. While G.Skill DDR2 800 runs at 1.8V - 1.9V, the G.Skill DDR2 1000 runs at 2.0V - 2.1V. I read here a while back that I would need to boot up the computer with 1.8V Ram and change the default setting in the BIOS to allow the higher voltage RAM, but since I don't have any DDR2 800 1.8V Ram to do this with, I am looking for the easist solution around this problem, if indeed, it really is a problem. Or will the MB post with the higher speed/voltage Ram?

Is this really an issue, and if so can I get some recommendations on the best course of action to get my system to where I want it to be.

Edit: I suppose I could get a DS3R, but I thought UGuru might be kinda nice to have. Is it worth it?

Thanks,

I can't tell you for certain whether or not it will be a problem. One thing you might try, if the two sticks aren't posting together, is to see if you can boot up with stick. Then go into the BIOS, make the necessary changes, shut down, and install the other stick.

My Gskill DDR2 1000 came at 1.8 800mhz out of the package. In fact on new eggs review site non of these geniuses can figure out how to get it to 1000mhz...

I went to look and the mfg replied that they do come at 1.8 1000mhz to avoid booting problems.

Is this the stuff you are talking about? http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231145 So you saying that the 2.0V - 2.1V listed on the specs page is incorrrect and that it is really 1.8V out of the box?

My IP35-E has no problem running my G-Skills (DDR2-8000) at over 1000MHz. Just leave the RAM voltage at auto.

Oh, I get it. Had to think about it for a minute... I am new to this. So the Ram comes out of the box set at 1.8V no matter what speed you buy, then you have to up the speed in the BIOS after you post. So basically the DDR2 1000 RAM is just like the slower RAM, but with factory tested better overclocking ability. Is that more or less accurate?

Psy - sort of. Boosting the voltage (on just about any RAM) will increase its performance. It's just that some RAM is marketed according to a factory-sanctioned overclock spec, while other RAM is marketed according to its DDR2-standard spec. Any RAM that is sold as DDR2 must work at 1.8V at *some* speed, otherwise it is defective and should be returned for refund/replacement under warranty.

Did you mean that your DDR2 800 runs at 1000? IF so then should I buy the DDR2 800 Ram and overclock it? I was told in the memory forum that there was no guarantee my Ram would OC that high, and that I should go with the DDR2 1000 to be safe if I was planning to OC to 4.0+ GHZ.

Thank you, that answered alot of my questions.

So I guess the only question I have left is similar to the one I asked in my previous post to Ghost recon88: To get an E8400 to 4.1 GHz +-, does the G.Skill DDR2 800 overclock that fast reliably while staying below 1.9V, or should I get DDR2 1000 to do this?

I bought the G-Skill 4GB DDR2-8000 kit, so its guranteed for 1000MHz. You might be able to hit 1000MHz with a DDR2-6400 kit, but its not guranteed.

i would look for chips with micron d9 type chips on the brainpower pcb. there are a number of ram with this combination.

i have an ip35e and it just loves the micron chips. i have 2x1 gig of adata ee with the micron d9s which has no problems hitting 1160 which would equate to 580fsb @1:1 ratio. @2.1vdimm. i also have some corsair xms with pro-mos chips that can pull 1000mhz @2.1vwith ease--haven't tried any higher with them. settings 5-5-5-15 or auto. other folks have run crucial and super-talent with microns and hit about the same.

the ip35e should boot up with the 1000mhz chips @1.8vdimm--but you'll only get 800mhz and auto settings till you set the ram up to run @1000 mhz.
